The Shifting Haven Copy link
Velanth is the homeland of the Veloth, though calling it a homeland can be misleading. Copy link
It occupies no fixed territory on the maps of Rhuna. Instead, Velanth forms within thin places—locations where the structure of reality has become uncertain enough for the Veloth to establish something more permanent within it.
An abandoned passage may lead there. Copy link
A forgotten doorway may briefly open into it. Copy link
A traveler may cross a threshold and realize the landscape behind them is no longer the one they left. Copy link
Velanth does not exist everywhere. Copy link
But it can exist in more than one place. Copy link
A Place Given Form Copy link
Velanth was not constructed as mortal cities are. Copy link
The earliest Veloth gathered within spaces left unstable by Vel's unmaking. As their communities grew, they learned to give those spaces greater consistency.

Structures developed. Copy link
Shared places acquired meaning. Copy link
What emerged was Velanth. Copy link
Its existence depends upon the Veloth maintaining enough continuity for the Haven to remain coherent. For this reason, Velanth reflects its people.
It changes. Copy link
But it does not change without reason. Copy link
The Shifting City Copy link
Velanth possesses recognizable districts, landmarks, and routes, but their relationships to one another are not always fixed.
A passage that takes minutes one day may require an hour another. A courtyard may appear between buildings where none existed before. A doorway may cease to connect with a room that has moved elsewhere within the Haven.
The Veloth navigate these changes through patterns that outsiders rarely notice. Copy link

The orientation of structures. Copy link
Subtle changes in the dark surfaces from which much of Velanth appears to be formed. Copy link
To a Veloth, the city is changing its language. Copy link
To everyone else, it appears to be moving. Copy link
Ink-Stone Copy link
Much of Velanth appears formed from a dark substance commonly called ink-stone. Copy link
Its surfaces range from matte black to reflective darkness, sometimes appearing solid and sometimes moving subtly beneath the surface.
Ink-stone responds poorly to permanent alteration. Copy link
Marks fade. Copy link
Damage slowly changes shape. Copy link
Structures repaired by Inkshapers may look different from what existed before. Copy link
This does not make Velanth indestructible. Copy link
It makes conventional construction difficult. Copy link
The Veloth build with change in mind. Copy link
The Quiet Wells Copy link
Throughout Velanth lie pools of perfectly still dark material known as the Quiet Wells. Copy link
Their surfaces do not reflect the world normally. Copy link
Instead, they respond to memory, identity, uncertainty, and possibility. Copy link
A Veloth may use a Quiet Well while contemplating a decision or attempting to understand a change within themselves. What appears upon the surface is interpreted rather than accepted as prophecy.
A Well shows possibility. Copy link
It does not show certainty. Copy link
This distinction is important. Copy link
Many outsiders have made terrible decisions after failing to understand it. Copy link
Form and the Young Copy link
Quiet Wells are particularly important to newly formed Veloth. Copy link
Young Veloth often struggle to maintain a consistent appearance as they begin establishing their identities. At the Wells, they practice holding a form while observing the possibilities reflected around them.
They are not choosing a permanent body. Copy link
They are learning the difference between changing and losing themselves. Copy link
This process may continue for years. Copy link
The Ink-Temples Copy link
The Ink-Temples are centers of contemplation, interpretation, and communal discussion. Copy link
They are most closely associated with the Echo-Bound, though any Veloth may enter them. Copy link
Their interiors are deliberately quiet. Copy link
Thoughts, memories, agreements, and questions may be recorded through shifting symbolic ribbons suspended throughout the chambers. These records are not conventional writing and often require an Echo-Bound to interpret them accurately.
Important Veloth decisions may be discussed here for long periods before consensus emerges. Copy link
Velanth has leaders when leadership is necessary. Copy link
It has little interest in rulers. Copy link
The Unchosen Hall Copy link
At the heart of Velanth stands the Unchosen Hall. Copy link
Its walls preserve symbolic impressions of decisions, abandoned identities, and possibilities surrendered through choice.
Veloth return here during significant transitions in their lives. Copy link
A name may be relinquished. Copy link
A relationship remembered. Copy link
A former identity acknowledged before being left behind. Copy link
The Hall does not contain every future that could ever have existed. Copy link
It preserves something more personal: Copy link
the possibilities the Veloth themselves once carried. Copy link
For a people who continually change, the Unchosen Hall ensures that becoming someone new does not require pretending someone old never existed.
The Voidbound Edges Copy link
Beyond Velanth's more stable districts lie the Voidbound Edges. Copy link
Here the Haven loses coherence. Copy link
Architecture becomes incomplete. Distances become unreliable. Passages may connect with thin places elsewhere in Rhuna. Copy link
Riftwalkers train along these boundaries. Copy link
They learn to identify stable crossings, recognize dangerous distortions, and determine when a passage should simply be left alone.
Travel through the Edges is never perfectly predictable. Copy link
Even experienced Riftwalkers can become lost. Copy link
The Echo Market Copy link
The Echo Market is one of Velanth's primary gathering places and among the easiest parts of the Haven for outsiders to understand.
Almost anything may be exchanged there. Copy link
Ordinary food and tools sit beside Veloth crafts, memories preserved within objects, temporary creations, symbolic works, information, favors, and things whose value depends entirely upon who wants them.
Veloth trade does not reject currency. Copy link
It simply does not assume currency is always the most valuable thing someone possesses. Copy link
An Inkshaper may want an unfamiliar material. Copy link
An Echo-Bound may ask for a story. Copy link
A Riftwalker may trade directions for directions. Copy link
The important part is that both parties understand what is being exchanged. Copy link
Life in Velanth Copy link
Despite its strangeness, Velanth is a community. Copy link
Veloth gather here to work, learn, argue, create, trade, and maintain relationships. Copy link
The Echo-Bound, Inkshapers, and Riftwalkers provide recognizable traditions within the Haven, but they are not rigid castes. A Veloth may follow one path for decades before choosing another.
Outsiders sometimes mistake Velanth's fluidity for disorder. Copy link
The Veloth see considerable structure within it. Copy link
Their structures simply allow themselves to change. Copy link
Reaching Velanth Copy link
Most entrances to Velanth exist through known thin places. Copy link
Some remain stable for years. Copy link
Others appear only under particular conditions or disappear entirely. Copy link
Veloth and experienced Riftwalkers know many of these passages, although few maintain complete records of them. Copy link
An outsider may occasionally enter Velanth accidentally, but this is uncommon. Copy link
Reaching it deliberately generally requires knowledge of an existing threshold or guidance from someone who knows the way.
Leaving presents the same problem. Copy link
Velanth does not imprison visitors merely because they entered. Copy link
But finding the correct way back can be difficult without help. Copy link
Defending Velanth Copy link
Velanth has no conventional city wall. Copy link
Its isolation provides its greatest defense. Copy link
Entrances can be abandoned or closed. Familiar passages can become inaccessible. Riftwalkers can guide inhabitants away from unstable districts while Inkshapers alter structures around threatened approaches.
This makes large-scale invasion extraordinarily difficult. Copy link
Not impossible. Copy link
Veloth history remembers occasions when hostile forces reached the Haven, and the possibility remains one of the reasons its people carefully guard knowledge of stable entrances.
