The Scent-Bound

The Kalthir are the Vathian people who emerged from the Fracturing of Kalthi. They are the mortal continuation of an Astraleth who once existed as a single, greater being.

Before her Fracturing, Kalthi drew forth Nari, the Thread of the living world. Nari remains one of Kalthi's great legacies within Rhuna.

The Kalthir are another.

Once a people of the great grasslands, the Kalthir now maintain a profound relationship with the Vahlwood, its Biome-Seeds, and the preservation of living systems threatened elsewhere in Rhuna.

From Kalthi, they inherited extraordinary Smell.

They completely lost Hearing.

Their world is silent, but it is anything but empty.

Every breath is a story. Every scent, a bond.

The Fracturing of Kalthi Copy link

The Kalthir are not descendants of Kalthi in the ordinary mortal sense.

They are what followed her Fracturing.

Something that had once existed as a singular Astraleth was divided across mortal existence. The Kalthir carry that inheritance forward as individuals, each possessing their own identity, experiences, relationships, and choices.

They are not Kalthi restored.

Nor are they incomplete pieces waiting to become her again.

They are the people who emerged from what remained.

The Inheritance of Smell Copy link

The Kalthir experience Smell with a depth unavailable to most peoples.

Plants, animals, water, soil, weather, food, smoke, decay, unfamiliar travelers, and changes within an environment can all produce distinct information.

Where another traveler might enter a forest and perceive only its general fragrance, a Kalthir can distinguish countless overlapping sources.

The living world continually announces itself.

This inheritance shaped Kalthir culture long before they came to the Vahlwood. Their grassland ancestors lived within landscapes where wind carried scent across open country, allowing the world to be followed through vegetation, water, animals, weather, and the traces left by other travelers.

Smell is not simply an enhanced sense to the Kalthir.

It is one of the principal ways they experience Rhuna.

A World Without Hearing Copy link

The Kalthir possess no Hearing.

They do not experience voices, music, thunder, footsteps, birdsong, or the sound of wind moving through the trees.

Sound is entirely absent from their sensory world.

Their cultures therefore developed without assuming that important information could be communicated through noise.

This can create challenges when Kalthir travel among peoples whose communities rely upon spoken conversation, calls, alarms, or other audible signals.

But silence does not make the Kalthir world empty.

The wind another person hears carries scents a Kalthir can separate and follow.

A forest that sounds alive to another traveler is alive to a Kalthir in an entirely different way.

From the Grasslands Copy link

The Kalthir were not originally a forest people.

Their oldest identity belongs to the grasslands.

Open country allowed scent to travel across enormous distances. Wind, vegetation, water, animals, weather, and migration created an ever-changing sensory landscape.

The loss of those grasslands remains important to Kalthir identity.

Their presence within the Vahlwood is therefore not simply the continuation of an ancient forest culture.

It is a story of displacement, adaptation, and preservation.

The Kalthir carry the memory of one living world while helping protect what survives of another.

The Vahlwood Copy link

Today, the Vahlwood has become one of the great centers of Kalthir life.

The forest is sustained by immense Biome-Seeds, living repositories capable of preserving and propagating entire ecosystems. Around them exist complex relationships between vegetation, creatures, insects, water, soil, and the conditions necessary for those systems to survive.

The Kalthir have become among the most important caretakers of these places.

Their extraordinary Smell makes them particularly sensitive to environmental change.

Unfamiliar musk.

Altered water.

Diseased vegetation.

Smoke.

Decay.

Changes in soil or animal populations.

The Kalthir may recognize that something within an ecosystem has changed before the problem becomes apparent to others.

The Vahlwood is therefore both refuge and responsibility.

The Biome-Seeds Copy link

The Biome-Seeds preserve more than individual plants or creatures.

Each maintains the relationships necessary for an entire living environment to continue.

The Kalthir tend these systems and protect their ability to propagate life beyond the forest.

Their responsibility is therefore not simply to preserve the Vahlwood as it currently exists.

It is to protect the possibility of renewal.

For a people whose own grassland homeland was lost, that purpose carries particular significance.

They know that an ecosystem can disappear.

The Biome-Seeds offer the possibility that disappearance does not always have to be permanent.

Aveterenia Copy link

Aveterenia stands at the heart of the Kalthir relationship with the Vahlwood.

Its immense living presence anchors the forest and the Biome-Seeds maintained around it.

For the Kalthir, Aveterenia represents more than an extraordinary tree.

It demonstrates that living systems can survive catastrophe, adapt to changed circumstances, and continue producing new life.

Life is gathered around Aveterenia.

But preservation is not meant to become imprisonment.

The ultimate purpose of protecting life is to allow it to grow again.

Nari Copy link

Nari is the Thread drawn forth by Kalthi.

Before her Fracturing, Kalthi drew Nari forth through the Ether Flames as an expression of the living world. The Thread remains part of her legacy within Rhuna even though Kalthi herself no longer exists in her former wholeness.

The Kalthir are something different.

They are the mortal continuation of Kalthi after her Fracturing.

This gives Nari and the Kalthir an unusually close relationship. Both originate with Kalthi, but in fundamentally different ways.

Nari carries Kalthi’s influence within Rhuna.

The Kalthir are what became of her.

Today, that shared origin is particularly significant within the Vahlwood and its Biome-Seeds, where the Kalthir protect living systems shaped and sustained through Nari.

Bonding Feasts Copy link

Among the most distinctive Kalthir traditions are Bonding Feasts.

Food carries extraordinary sensory significance to a people whose experience of Smell is so highly developed. Ingredients contain traces of landscape, plant, animal, preparation, and the circumstances through which they were gathered.

Bonding Feasts turn these qualities into shared cultural experience.

Through preparing and consuming food together, Kalthir form connections with what has been gathered and with those participating in the feast.

The tradition reflects an important part of Kalthir existence:

The living world is not something experienced only from a distance.

It enters the body.

It becomes part of what continues forward.

The Vaelrisae Copy link

The Moth-Tenders

The Vaelrisae tend the Astral-Moths, whose wings carry patterns associated with the constellations present at their birth.

Their preserved wings can be worn as luminous cloaks, connecting the lives of the moths with memory, celestial pattern, and the passage of time.

The Vaelrisae preserve these relationships across generations.

Their traditions connect the terrestrial life protected within the Vahlwood with the greater celestial world beyond its canopy.

The Thorynmar Copy link

The Orm-Mara Bonded

The Thorynmar maintain relationships with the ancient Orm-Mara, winged ant queens inhabiting the root systems beneath the Vahlwood.

They travel the tunnels beneath the Biome-Seeds and protect the hidden systems upon which the forest above depends.

Their relationship with the Orm-Mara is aided by distinctive musk that grants them safe passage through insect territories.

The Thorynmar understand something easily forgotten by those who look only toward the canopy:

Much of what keeps a forest alive happens where no sunlight reaches.

The Lorrathen Copy link

The Tree-Runners

The Lorrathen travel the canopy pathways of the Vahlwood.

They serve as couriers between Biome-Seeds, carrying news, pollen, water, and other necessities across the living heights of the forest.

Their routes follow scent-marked pathways through branches and vegetation, allowing them to navigate rapidly through terrain difficult for most travelers to cross.

Where the Vahlwood divides into distant crowns and isolated heights, the Lorrathen create connection.

The Aurenkai Copy link

The Grassland-Bounders

Of the great Kalthir traditions, the Aurenkai retain perhaps the strongest connection to their people's grassland past.

They tend the plains Biome-Seeds around the base of Aveterenia and preserve traditions associated with open terrain, speed, wind, and the landscapes their people once inhabited.

Some still undertake the Run, venturing beyond the forest to experience the scents of the open world.

The practice carries danger.

It also preserves memory.

The Kalthir were not always a people beneath the canopy.

The Aurenkai refuse to forget the wind that once crossed their homeland unobstructed.

Memory in Scent Copy link

Scent and memory are deeply intertwined within Kalthir experience.

A familiar plant can recall a place.

Smoke can recall disaster.

Food can recall a gathering.

The scent of another person can become inseparable from memories associated with them.

This gives ecological preservation particular meaning.

When a species disappears, something more than a form of life is lost.

Its scent disappears with it.

So do the relationships and memories that scent could evoke.

To the Kalthir, preserving an ecosystem also means preserving ways of experiencing Rhuna that might otherwise cease to exist.

Kalthir Beyond the Vahlwood Copy link

Not every Kalthir remains within the forest.

Some travel in search of surviving ecosystems, lost Biome-Seeds, unusual plants, creatures, or places where restoration remains possible.

Others leave for entirely personal reasons.

Beyond Kalthir communities, they frequently encounter societies designed around Hearing. Spoken conversations, audible warnings, performances, and other everyday practices can carry information unavailable to them.

Yet Kalthir travelers perceive environmental information their companions may completely overlook.

What another traveler hears approaching, a Kalthir may have already smelled upon the wind.

Va and the Kalthir Copy link

Like all Vathians, the Kalthir remain vulnerable to Va.

The Fracturing of Kalthi left them without Hearing, and Va can exploit the absence carried within that inheritance.

Its danger lies in making absence feel like incompleteness.

The possibility of experiencing what was lost can become a temptation to seek something that cannot truly restore the Astraleth from which the Kalthir emerged.

But the Kalthir are not unfinished Kalthi.

Their cultures have lived, changed, remembered, and endured without Hearing.

They do not require sound to become whole.

The Scent-Bound Copy link

The Kalthir carry two legacies of Kalthi beside them.

One is Nari, the Thread she drew forth.

The other is themselves, the mortal people who continued after she was fractured.

Their history has taken them from open grasslands to the immense canopy of the Vahlwood.

The Vaelrisae tend the Astral-Moths.

The Thorynmar descend among the roots.

The Lorrathen race through the canopy.

The Aurenkai remember the open plains.

Together, they protect living worlds that might otherwise disappear.

The Kalthir know what it means to lose a homeland.

That is why they tend what remains.
