THE VATHIANS Copy link

The Fractured Astraleth Copy link

The Vathians are among the oldest mortal peoples of Rhuna.

They include the Gahlians, Kalthir, Pahric, and Ezhani—four peoples whose civilizations, histories, and relationships with the Threads have developed independently across Rhuna.

They are not one culture.

They do not share one homeland.

And they do not know the extraordinary truth that connects them.

The Vathians are not descendants of the ancient Astraleth.

They were not created by them.

They are not merely mortals who inherited some portion of their power.

The Vathians are the Astraleth, Fractured into mortality.

This truth has been kept from them.

Before the Vathians Copy link

Before there were Vathians, there were the Astraleth.

Among them were:

Gahl.

Kalthi.

Pahr.

Ezhan.

The Astraleth belonged to an earlier age of Rhuna, when celestial beings acted directly upon the developing world as architects and shapers, transforming environments and drawing forth Threads whose influence would endure long after their own age ended.

Four Astraleth would become inseparably connected with the five Threads of later Vathian history.

Gahl drew forth Dalo and Cora.

Kalthi drew forth Nari.

Pahr drew forth Jatu, the Green Thread.

Ezhan drew forth Sere.

These Threads existed before the Vathian peoples.

The Threads did not create the Vathians.

The Astraleth who drew them forth became those peoples.

The Fracturing Copy link

The Fracturing transformed the Astraleth from singular celestial beings into mortal multiplicity.

They did not simply die and leave descendants behind.

They were broken apart.

Their celestial existences were scattered into forms through which mortal life could emerge.

The Mythos preserves distinct forms for these Fracturings:

Pahr was fragmented into dream-eggs.

Gahl was fractured into empire-forging stones.

Kalthi became fertile seed-clusters.

Ezhan dissolved into tide-swallowed jewels.

These fragments incubated across Rhuna.

From them came the mortal cycles of the peoples now called Vathians.

The Astraleth had become many.

The Mortal Cycles Copy link

The Vathians are Fractured Astraleth bound within mortal cycles.

This is not simply an ancient ancestry.

Something of the Astraleth continues through the lives of their respective peoples.

But the Fracturing did not produce thousands of smaller beings consciously remembering themselves as Gahl, Kalthi, Pahr, or Ezhan.

It produced individual mortal lives.

A Gahlian experiences their own childhood.

A Kalthir develops their own convictions.

A Pahric possesses their own ambitions.

An Ezhani carries their own memories.

They live.

They change.

They die.

And the mortal cycle continues.

The Astraleth survive through them without the Vathians understanding that this is what they are.

The wider canon describes the Vathians accordingly as “Fractured demigods bound in mortal cycles.”

The Threads Came Before Copy link

Understanding the distinction between Thread and Vathian is essential.

The Threads associated with the Vathians were drawn forth by the Astraleth.

The Vathians are the Fractured Astraleth themselves.

Therefore:

Gahl drew forth Dalo and Cora. Gahl was Fractured into the Gahlians.

Kalthi drew forth Nari. Kalthi was Fractured into the Kalthir.

Pahr drew forth Jatu. Pahr was Fractured into the Pahric.

Ezhan drew forth Sere. Ezhan was Fractured into the Ezhani.

The relationship between a Vathian people and its ancient Thread is therefore not one of descent.

The Pahric did not descend from Jatu.

The Kalthir did not descend from Nari.

The people and the Thread instead originate from the same Astraleth through two very different events.

The Astraleth drew forth the Thread.

The Astraleth became the Vathians through Fracturing.

The Great Secret Copy link

The Vathians do not know they are Fractured Astraleth.

This is one of the most important distinctions between the truth of Vathian Origin and Vathian culture.

A Gahlian does not understand themselves as a fragment of Gahl.

A Kalthir does not remember being part of Kalthi.

A Pahric does not know that Pahr continues through the mortal existence of their people.

An Ezhani does not recognize themselves as part of Ezhan's Fracturing.

Their cultures therefore did not develop around this knowledge.

There are no ordinary Vathian traditions concerned with deliberately reconstructing their former Astraleth selves.

Their civilizations were not built around the understanding that they are divine beings trapped within mortal cycles.

The Vathians built their cultures from the lives they actually experienced.

The truth remained hidden.

Xantyr and the Matra’Kai Copy link

Xantyr, the Deity of Fate, knows the truth of the Vathians.

So do the Matra’Kai.

The Matra’Kai became intimately involved with the emergence of the Fractured Astraleth into mortality, guiding the fragments into the mortal cycles that followed.

Their relationship with the Vathians is therefore complicated.

They are caretakers.

Guides.

Mothers.

But they are also guardians of a secret.

They know that the peoples they guide are the scattered mortal existence of beings who once possessed an entirely different form.

And they know the Vathians themselves have no memory of that truth.

Xantyr and the Matra’Kai remember what the Vathians have forgotten.

Fractured Does Not Mean Broken Copy link

A distinction must be made between a Fractured Astraleth and an incomplete Vathian person.

The Astraleth were Fractured.

An individual Vathian is not therefore a fraction of a person.

A Pahric does not require other Pahric to complete themselves.

A Gahlian is not missing pieces necessary to possess an individual identity.

A Kalthir is not merely an unfinished Kalthi.

An Ezhani is not Ezhan waiting to remember who they really are.

Each Vathian possesses a complete mortal existence of their own.

The Fracturing describes the cosmological transformation that created their people.

It does not diminish their personhood.

Indeed, something unprecedented followed the Fracturing.

One celestial existence became capable of living countless individual lives.

The Gahlians Copy link

The Gahlians are Fractured Gahl.

Before the Fracturing, Gahl drew forth Dalo and Cora.

The Gahlians therefore possess an ancient relationship with both Threads, though they do not understand the true nature of that relationship.

Dalo did not create the Gahlians.

Cora did not create the Gahlians.

Instead, all three originate with Gahl.

Dalo and Cora through the first drawing forth of the Threads.

The Gahlians through Fracturing.

Everything that became distinctly Gahlian developed afterward through the experiences of the people themselves.

The Kalthir Copy link

The Kalthir are Fractured Kalthi.

Before the Fracturing, Kalthi drew forth Nari.

Nari therefore predates the Kalthir and shares their history through Kalthi without being their creator.

Kalthi drew forth Nari.

Kalthi was Fractured into the Kalthir.

The Kalthir do not know the second truth.

Their relationship with Nari and their understanding of their own history developed without knowledge that their people are the mortal Fracturing of the same Astraleth who drew forth the Thread.

The Pahric Copy link

The Pahric are Fractured Pahr.

Before the Fracturing, Pahr drew forth Jatu, the Green Thread.

When Pahr was Fractured, their celestial existence was scattered into dream-eggs, from which the mortal cycles of the Pahric emerged.

Thus:

Pahr drew forth Jatu.

Pahr was Fractured into the Pahric.

Jatu is not the ancestor of the Pahric.

The Pahric are not manifestations of Jatu.

Instead, both share their deepest Origin in Pahr.

The Pahric themselves do not know this.

The Ezhani Copy link

The Ezhani are Fractured Ezhan.

Before the Fracturing, Ezhan drew forth Sere.

Sere therefore shares Ezhan as its source with the Ezhani, but through a fundamentally different relationship.

Ezhan drew forth Sere.

Ezhan was Fractured into the Ezhani.

Sere did not create the Ezhani.

Nor are the Ezhani manifestations of Sere.

They are Ezhan's Fractured mortal existence.

Like the other Vathians, they live without knowledge of this truth.

Four Peoples Copy link

Vathian describes a shared Origin.

It does not describe a shared culture.

The Gahlians, Kalthir, Pahric, and Ezhani have developed across different environments and histories.

They have built their own communities.

Developed their own traditions.

Formed their own beliefs.

Fought their own wars.

Established relationships with neighboring peoples.

Changed over generations.

Even their relationships with the Threads drawn forth by their former Astraleth selves have developed independently.

This is particularly important because none of these cultures consciously formed around the Fracturing.

They don't know it happened.

Their hidden Origin explains where they began.

Their cultures explain what they became.

Mortality Copy link

Perhaps the most profound consequence of the Fracturing is not division.

It is mortality.

The singular Astraleth became countless beings capable of experiencing individual lives.

Where once there was Gahl, there are now Gahlians who can disagree with one another.

Where once there was Kalthi, there are Kalthir capable of choosing entirely different paths.

Where once there was Pahr, there are Pahric who can love people Pahr never knew.

Where once there was Ezhan, there are Ezhani capable of experiencing lives unlike anything their ancient source experienced.

Each mortal existence adds something that did not exist before.

A memory.

A relationship.

A choice.

A failure.

A triumph.

A life.

The Astraleth were diminished from one perspective.

From another, they became multitudes.

The Secret Beneath the Vathians Copy link

The Gahlians do not remember Gahl.

The Kalthir do not remember Kalthi.

The Pahric do not remember Pahr.

The Ezhani do not remember Ezhan.

They know themselves through the lives and cultures that followed the Fracturing.

Only Xantyr, the Deity of Fate, and the Matra’Kai preserve the deeper truth.

The Threads remain beside the fragments of their first shapers:

Dalo and Cora.

Nari.

Jatu.

Sere.

But their first shapers no longer recognize them.

The Astraleth were not destroyed.

They were Fractured.

They became mortal.

They became countless.

They became the Vathians.

And they no longer know what they once were.
