Imarand – The Mirage Realm of Compassion Copy link
Origins of the Mirage Sands Copy link
Imarand is the homeland of the Imari, shaped in echo of their Astral parent, Imar, Astral of Compassion. Though Imar never walked Rhuna, the Imari arrived during the great portal-balancing of the Nuhlrin, carrying with them both memory and artistry from their Astral origin. They chose to settle where Pahr had once dragged the Green Thread across the Eastern plains. In those Threading years, the land drank deeply of vision, then dried out, leaving behind vast silt-sands infused with divine mirage. This wasteland of painted illusions, now called the Imaraggi-Sands, became the proving ground of the Imari’s survival and their greatest inheritance.
Here, nothing remains fixed: dunes shift daily, oases appear and vanish, and mirages blur the line between truth and deception. To mortals, it is perilous. To the Imari, it is a canvas.
The Borders of Imarand Copy link
Imarand lies at the fragile seam of Balance, bordered by forces that constantly test its resilience:
• West – The Pale Road & the Witherlands The great artery of trade, the Pale Road, cuts down the western frontier of Imarand, a lifeline of caravans and shadow markets. Yet it runs dangerously close to Eredal and the Witherlands, where Vel’s corruption bleeds across stone and sand. Every caravan risks being swallowed by Wither-storms or stalked by twisted beasts. The Imari weave protective mirages here, hiding travelers in folds of illusion, but the road remains a place of high risk and high exchange.
• North – Duranel Duranel borders Imarand’s green edge. Ereth communities along the fertile river valleys meet the creeping dunes here. Here the fertile river valleys of the Ereth touch the creeping dunes, and both cultures meet in symbiosis. Ereth root-tenders and Imari painters collaborate in oasis-holds and shared sanctuaries, blending growth with compassion, permanence with impermanence.
• East – Demuria The coast of Imarand faces the impossible veil of Demuria, where Pahric visions bleed into reality. The Imari established Onerra here—a shared city of stone, art, and mirage—anchoring the Pahric’s dream-walkers to the waking world. From Onerra rises the Great Library, part archive, part reality-anchor, safeguarding truths that might otherwise dissolve into the sands of illusion.
• South – The Sharr-Hural & the Uthuru Bands of Uthuru nomads descend from the peaks of Asherak into the Sharr-Hural deserts, scavenging old vehicle husks and raiding caravans along the Pale Road. Some strike bargains with Imari illusionists, trading chaos for safe passage. Others bring only fire and steel, forcing the Imari to cloak their cities in mirage to remain unseen.
The Brushlands and the Imaraggi-Sands Copy link
The western expanse of Imarand is dominated by the Brushlands, a rugged landscape of thorny scrub, broken mesas, and buried rivers. At its heart lies Ashruun’s Maw, a vast depression where mirage storms form most violently, scattering illusions that last for days. The Maw is both feared and revered—a place where artists seek visions, caravans vanish, and prophets lose themselves.
Stretching eastward are the Imaraggi-Sands, the shifting desert born of Pahr’s Green Thread. The dunes here are shot through with silt that glimmers faintly in moonlight, dusting travelers in patterns of emerald glow. Those who breathe too deeply of the sand often dream of futures not their own, caught in visions until they cannot tell waking from memory. For the Imari, these sands are both homeland and teacher.
Cities and Waypoints of Imarand Copy link
Though the Imari prefer impermanent mirage-cities, several waypoints are fixed upon the maps of traders and wanderers:
• Ishtaria – The westernmost hold, a market-city perched at the edge of the Pale Road. Here, Shadow Markets thrive, and Imari mural-rituals are sold alongside illicit relics carried up from the Witherlands.
• Kelzahr – A canyon-strung settlement that acts as a shield between the Brushlands and the Pale Road. Known for its echo-paint halls, where murals shift to record every word spoken within.
• Thaas’nel – A northern outpost on the edge of the Sel’kahra Dunes, where Pahric interpreters often work beside Imari Veilbinders to stabilize the shifting borders of Demuria.
• Qhol’Tahven – The desert’s “meeting well,” a hub where caravans converge to share water and news before vanishing again into the sands. Many Triune Keys begin their journeys here.
• Saliik-Vara – A southern ridgehold, scarred by Uthuru raids. Its painted cliffs carry illusion-glyphs so potent they can hide an entire caravan in plain sight.
• Arim-Dahl – The southernmost oasis-fort, where Beastbound Ereth and Imari Sha’varin share guardianship against raiders.
• Onerra – On the eastern coast, the shared jewel of Pahric and Imari—a city of towers cloaked in mist and illusion, home to the Great Library and the Cloud-Bridge to Demuria.
The Pale Road Copy link
The Pale Road is Imarand’s spine, running north to south, threading caravans between the Witherlands and the Sharr-Hural. Its name comes from its color—ashen dust that stains travelers gray, a reminder of how close they are to Vel’s shadow. Along its length, caravans carry Jatu pigments, desert spices, scripture silks, and truths hidden in story or song.
The road is more than commerce: it is survival. The Imari see the Pale Road as both wound and lifeline—a scar left by Balance’s war with Wither, but also the artery by which compassion can travel into the world. Every mural-ritual performed along its length is a prayer that the road will endure another season.
The Character of Imarand Copy link
Imarand is a country of impermanence, its landscapes in constant motion, its cities rising and falling like tides of color. To outsiders it is a place of danger and deception. To the Imari it is truth itself: nothing is permanent, everything is painted, and compassion lies not in what endures, but in what one chooses to create before it fades.
