The Far-Seers of Pahr

The Pahric are the Vathian people who emerged from the Fracturing of Pahr.

Before his Fracturing, Pahr drew forth Jatu, the Green Thread. Jatu remained within Rhuna after Pahr was broken, while Pahr himself continued through the mortal lives of the Pahric.

These are two distinct parts of the same ancient legacy.

Jatu is what Pahr drew forth.

The Pahric are what Pahr became.

The Pahric inherited extraordinary Sight and completely lost Smell. Their heightened perception, relationship with Jatu, and long history beneath the desert skies of Demuria have produced cultures deeply concerned with observation, navigation, Guidance, possibility, and the difference between what can be seen and what can truly be known.

The Fracturing of Pahr Copy link

The Pahric are not mortal descendants of Pahr.

They are his continuation after the Fracturing.

The singular existence of the Astraleth became countless mortal lives, each carrying something of Pahr while developing an identity entirely its own.

A Pahric is therefore not Pahr reborn.

They do not possess his complete memories, personality, or purpose.

They inherit a beginning.

Everything afterward belongs to the individual.

The Inheritance of Sight Copy link

The Pahric possess extraordinary Sight.

Distance, movement, color, pattern, light, contrast, and subtle visual changes can be perceived with remarkable precision.

A distant shape may remain distinct.

Minute movement may reveal something concealed.

Changes in stars, clouds, terrain, or light can communicate information another traveler overlooks.

This inheritance has profoundly influenced Pahric navigation, astronomy, art, architecture, and traditions of observation.

But seeing more does not mean understanding everything that is seen.

That distinction lies at the heart of Pahric culture.

A World Without Smell Copy link

The Pahric possess no Smell.

Smoke carries no scent.

Food produces no aroma.

Flowers, rain, animals, decay, perfume, and the desert air itself cannot be experienced through Smell.

Pahric communities therefore developed without relying upon scent as a source of information.

This becomes more significant when traveling among other peoples. A warning obvious through Smell may be completely imperceptible to a Pahric unless another sense reveals it.

Their extraordinary Sight compensates in many circumstances.

It does not replace what is absent.

The Pahric simply experience the world differently.

Demuria Copy link

The ancestral homeland of the Pahric is Demuria, a desert land of sand, brilliant skies, distant horizons, and scattered settlements shaped by the demands of survival.

The environment is particularly suited to Pahric perception.

Open terrain rewards extraordinary Sight.

Landmarks can be followed across great distances.

The movement of weather can be observed along the horizon.

Stars provide guidance through the night.

Light itself becomes information.

Pahric culture developed within a landscape where knowing where to look could determine whether a traveler reached their destination at all.

Jatu Copy link

Jatu is the Green Thread drawn forth by Pahr.

Before his Fracturing, Pahr drew Jatu forth through the Ether Flames. The Thread remained within Rhuna after the Astraleth who drew it forth became the mortal people now known as the Pahric.

Jatu is associated with Guidance.

It does not simply reveal a predetermined future or command someone toward a single inevitable destination. Guidance concerns paths, direction, possibility, and the choices that determine where someone ultimately arrives.

The Pahric therefore share a particularly intimate historical relationship with Jatu.

But Jatu and the Pahric are not the same inheritance.

Jatu carries Pahr’s influence within Rhuna.

The Pahric are Pahr's continuation.

Guidance Copy link

Guidance is not certainty.

A path can be visible without being safe.

A destination can be known without revealing the cost of reaching it.

A person can receive direction and still refuse to follow it.

This distinction is central to Pahric traditions.

Their extraordinary Sight makes them capable of perceiving things others miss, while Jatu creates relationships with Guidance extending beyond ordinary observation.

Neither guarantees the correct decision.

The Pahric must still interpret what they perceive.

And interpretation can fail.

Mother Zemek Copy link

Mother Zemek occupies an important place within Pahric life and the history of Demuria.

Her presence is intertwined with the survival and continuation of the Pahric within their desert homeland, becoming part of the relationship between people, land, and the conditions necessary for life to endure there.

Pahric traditions surrounding Mother Zemek reflect the importance of shelter, continuity, and protection within an environment where survival can never be assumed.

Demuria may appear barren to outsiders.

The Pahric know where life remains.

Santeshar Copy link

The Santeshar are among the distinctive creatures associated with Pahric life.

Their ability to disappear against the desert landscape reflects one of Demuria's recurring lessons:

Something can remain directly before you and still become difficult to perceive.

The Pahric have developed traditions of camouflage and visual misdirection influenced by the same environment.

Their extraordinary Sight makes them especially attentive to how perception can be manipulated.

To understand Sight is also to understand its weaknesses.

The Shavrahni Copy link

The Starborne Navigators

The Shavrahni are navigators, travelers, and interpreters of the celestial world.

They study stars, horizons, changing light, and the relationships between distant points, maintaining traditions capable of guiding travelers across environments where recognizable paths may disappear beneath wind and sand.

Their extraordinary Sight makes the night sky exceptionally rich with information.

But navigation requires more than knowing where something lies.

The Shavrahni must understand how to reach it.

Their traditions embody one of the simplest expressions of Guidance:

A destination is useless without a path.

The Veythali Copy link

The Threadweavers of the Present

The Veythali focus upon what exists now.

Where others may become consumed by distant possibilities, the Veythali examine the relationships already unfolding around them.

They observe decisions, circumstances, people, and Threads as they intersect in the present moment.

Their traditions emphasize that every future begins with something happening now.

Possibility cannot be understood while ignoring the conditions producing it.

The Veythali therefore seek Guidance not by escaping the present, but by understanding it more completely.

The Zeymrahn Copy link

The Mirror-Seers of the Veil

The Zeymrahn explore the uncertain boundaries between perception and possibility.

Their traditions concern visions, reflections, potential outcomes, and things that may be glimpsed without necessarily becoming real.

This work makes them valuable.

It also makes them dangerous to trust without question.

A possible future is not a promised future.

A vision may reveal what could happen.

The choices made afterward determine whether it does.

The Zeymrahn therefore confront one of the greatest dangers inherent in extraordinary Sight:

Mistaking what has been seen for what must be true.

Sight and Illusion Copy link

The Pahric possess some of the most extraordinary Sight in Rhuna.

That does not make them immune to deception.

In some ways, it makes visual deception particularly significant to their culture.

A person who trusts Sight completely can be manipulated by controlling what they are allowed to see.

Mirage.

Camouflage.

Reflection.

Distance.

Perspective.

Light.

Each can alter the relationship between observation and truth.

Pahric traditions therefore distinguish between seeing something and understanding what has been seen.

The first is perception.

The second requires judgment.

Time and Possibility Copy link

Pahric traditions frequently consider the relationship between present choices and possible futures.

A future that can be perceived is not necessarily fixed.

A path can change.

A traveler can turn aside.

New information can alter a decision.

Another person can intervene.

Circumstances can transform.

This makes possibility useful precisely because it is uncertain.

If the future were already determined, Guidance would have little meaning.

A path matters because someone must still choose whether to walk it.

Pahric Beyond Demuria Copy link

Pahric travelers can be found far beyond the deserts of Demuria.

Their extraordinary Sight makes them valuable navigators, scouts, observers, cartographers, travelers, and interpreters of distant terrain.

Some leave Demuria to follow Guidance.

Others leave because they reject the path expected of them.

Some seek unfamiliar horizons simply because they want to know what lies beyond them.

Outside Pahric communities, the absence of Smell can create unexpected difficulties.

But their Sight frequently reveals dangers and opportunities long before their companions recognize them.

Va and the Pahric Copy link

Like all Vathians, the Pahric remain vulnerable to Va.

The Fracturing of Pahr left them without Smell, and Va can exploit the absence carried within that inheritance.

But Va can also prey upon another Pahric vulnerability:

the desire to know.

Extraordinary Sight can encourage the belief that if someone could only see a little farther, perceive one more possibility, or uncover one more hidden truth, uncertainty might finally disappear.

It never does.

The promise of perfect perception can become as dangerous as the promise of restoring what was lost.

The Pahric are not incomplete because they cannot Smell.

And they do not need to see everything in order to choose a path.

The Far-Seers Copy link

The Pahric carry two legacies of Pahr.

Jatu is the Thread he drew forth.

The Pahric are the people who continued after his Fracturing.

The Shavrahni look toward distant destinations.

The Veythali study the present from which every journey begins.

The Zeymrahn look toward possibilities that may never come to pass.

All three confront the same fundamental truth.

Sight can reveal a path.

Guidance can point toward it.

Neither can make the choice.

The Pahric must decide where they go next.
