The Fractured People of Gahl Copy link
The Gahlians are the Vathian people who emerged from the Fracturing of Gahl.
Before that Fracturing, Gahl drew forth two Threads:
Dalo and Cora.
Both remained within Rhuna after Gahl was broken, while Gahl's own fractured existence continued through the mortal Gahlians.
This gives the Gahlians an inheritance unlike that of the other Vathian peoples.
They are one people originating from one Astraleth, but their relationship with Gahl's two Threads produces two distinct Gahlian expressions.
Dalo Gahlians possess extraordinary Touch and no Taste.
Cora Gahlians possess extraordinary Taste and no Touch.
Gahlian | Thread | Heightened Sense | Absent Sense |
|---|---|---|---|
Dalo Gahlian | Dalo | Touch | Taste |
Cora Gahlian | Cora | Taste | Touch |
They share Gahl.
They experience Rhuna very differently.
Gahl, Dalo, and Cora Copy link
The distinction between these three names is fundamental.
Gahl was the Astraleth.
Dalo and Cora were the Threads Gahl drew forth.
The Gahlians are the mortal people who emerged when Gahl was fractured.
A Dalo Gahlian is therefore not a mortal fragment of an Astraleth named Dalo.
A Cora Gahlian is not descended from an Astraleth named Cora.
Both are Gahlians.
Their different expressions are tied to the two Threads drawn forth by the Astraleth from whom they both emerged.

The Inheritance of Touch Copy link
Dalo Gahlians possess extraordinary Touch.
Pressure, vibration, texture, temperature, resistance, movement, and physical contact can provide information with a depth inaccessible to most peoples.
They possess no Taste.
Food still has temperature, texture, aroma, nourishment, and appearance, but flavor upon the tongue does not exist for them.
This sensory inheritance has profoundly influenced Dalo Gahlian traditions of physical mastery, craft, construction, and combat.
A World of Touch Copy link
For a Dalo Gahlian, physical contact can reveal remarkable detail.
A hand against stone reveals its surface.
A weapon communicates balance and resistance through the grip.
A hammer striking metal sends information back through the arm.
Movement can be understood through subtle vibration and pressure.
This does not make every Dalo Gahlian a warrior or smith.
It does help explain why traditions involving close interaction with the physical world became so prominent among them.
Food Without Taste Copy link
Dalo Gahlians cannot Taste.
Their culinary experiences consequently place significance on qualities available through their remaining senses.
Texture can matter.
Temperature can matter.
Aroma can matter.
Presentation can matter.
The physical structure of food can matter.
This becomes particularly striking when Dalo and Cora Gahlians eat together.
One experiences the physical qualities of the meal with extraordinary sensitivity.
The other experiences its Taste with equal intensity.
The Vorthuzar Copy link
The Flame-Blades
The Vorthuzar are one of the great Dalo Gahlian traditions.
They are warrior-duelists and champions associated with courage, martial reputation, and decisive physical action.
Their heightened Touch gives close combat a particularly immediate quality. Balance, impact, resistance, movement, and the behavior of a weapon can all be experienced through extraordinary tactile sensitivity.
Vorthuzar traditions celebrate the willingness to stand visibly against danger.
Strength is demonstrated through action.
But action also creates responsibility for what follows.
The Khardural Copy link
The Forge-Keepers
The Khardural are smiths, builders, and keepers of Dalo Gahlian craft traditions.
They create weapons, fortifications, tools, relics, and other works intended to endure.
Their heightened Touch makes the forge an especially rich sensory environment.
Material responds beneath the hand.
Heat changes it.
Force reshapes it.
Every strike returns information.
The Khardural do not simply impose form upon material.
They learn how material responds.
Strength and Leadership Copy link
Dalo Gahlian traditions have long placed importance upon strength.
But strength is broader than physical dominance.
A warrior can hold a line.
A builder can create something capable of surviving catastrophe.
A leader can accept responsibility when others depend upon a decision.
A community can endure circumstances no individual could withstand alone.
The danger comes when strength becomes its own justification.
The ability to impose one's will does not establish the right to do so.
Cora Gahlians Copy link
The Inheritance of Taste Copy link
Cora Gahlians possess extraordinary Taste.
Substances contain distinctions and complexities inaccessible to most peoples. Water, food, plants, minerals, medicines, and prepared compounds can communicate remarkable information through Taste.
They possess no Touch.
Pressure, texture, tactile temperature, and physical contact do not register as sensation.
Their bodies still interact with the physical world.
They simply do not experience those interactions through Touch.
A World Without Touch Copy link
The absence of Touch fundamentally changes Cora Gahlian life.
A hand placed upon the skin cannot be felt.
Soft cloth does not feel soft.
A rough surface does not feel rough.
Physical contact cannot warn them of danger in the way it might another person.
Cora Gahlian cultures therefore cannot assume that the body will communicate information through tactile sensation.
Their extraordinary Taste provides an entirely different avenue through which the physical world can be investigated and understood.
The Depth of Taste Copy link
For a Cora Gahlian, Taste can become more than flavor.
Minute differences within substances may reveal information another person could never detect.
Two samples of water that seem identical to someone else may be profoundly different to them.
Plants can carry distinctions.
Minerals can carry distinctions.
Mixtures can reveal their components.
Preparation can transform the information available through Taste.
This extraordinary sensitivity has become particularly significant in Cora Gahlian traditions surrounding water, compounds, and transformation.
The Isareth Copy link
The Pool-Stewards
The Isareth are scholars and stewards associated with the Castellar Pools.
They study unusual waters and crystalline substances, using extraordinary Taste to recognize properties unavailable to most other peoples.
Their traditions include the preparation and study of elixirs associated with healing, foresight, and transformation.
This work demands precision.
A difference invisible to another person's senses may completely change what an Isareth perceives within a substance.
The Rythane Copy link
The Veil-Walkers
The Rythane represent another expression of Cora Gahlian culture.
Their traditions are associated with mist, concealment, infiltration, and transformation of appearance.
Where the Isareth study change through substances and the Castellar Pools, the Rythane apply transformation more directly to themselves and the way they move through the world.
Their abilities have made them valuable in some communities and deeply mistrusted in others.
Intimacy and Sensation Copy link
The sensory divide between Dalo and Cora Gahlians affects more than practical life.
It changes how physical relationships are experienced.
A Dalo Gahlian may experience Touch with extraordinary intensity.
A Cora Gahlian cannot experience it at all.
That does not make physical gestures meaningless to Cora Gahlians.
Their significance simply cannot depend upon tactile sensation.
Proximity, gesture, Taste, scent, voice, shared ritual, and deliberate attention can all communicate forms of intimacy another culture might primarily express through Touch.
The Gahlian sensory divide demonstrates that the same action can carry very different experiences depending upon the body receiving it.
One People, Two Expressions Copy link
Dalo and Cora Gahlians are not unrelated peoples grouped beneath a convenient name.
They share a common origin in Gahl.
Their differences arise through their relationships with Dalo and Cora, the two Threads Gahl drew forth, and through the divided sensory inheritance carried after Gahl's Fracturing.
That shared origin does not erase cultural difference.
Nor does cultural difference erase shared origin.
Both are Gahlian.
Va and the Gahlians Copy link
Like all Vathians, Gahlians are vulnerable to Va.
Their sensory absences provide particularly intimate points through which longing can be exploited.
A Dalo Gahlian has never experienced Taste.
A Cora Gahlian has never experienced Touch.
Va can make that absence feel like something stolen that must be reclaimed.
But neither Gahlian expression is an incomplete version of Gahl.
Nor does acquiring an absent sensation restore what existed before the Fracturing.
The Gahlians are already living the existence that came afterward.
The Legacy of Gahl Copy link
Gahl left two kinds of legacy within Rhuna.
Dalo and Cora are what Gahl drew forth.
The Gahlians are what Gahl became.
That distinction defines them.
Dalo Gahlians encounter Rhuna through extraordinary Touch.
Cora Gahlians encounter it through extraordinary Taste.
From those different experiences grew different customs, traditions, skills, and ways of understanding the world.
Yet beneath both remains the same ancient fracture.
One Astraleth became many lives.
Those lives became cultures.
And after generations of mortal experience, the Gahlians are far more than remnants of the being who came before them.
Gahl is their beginning, not their identity.
