Onerra — City of Veils and Return Copy link
"Between breath and memory, between mirage and math, we keep the door open." — Keeper Seryn of Veylan
The Threshold of Two Worlds Copy link
Onerra is not merely a capital; it is a hinge. Half harbored in the waking world, half braided to Demuria by the Cloud-Bridge, the city is the shared heart of the Imari and Pahric, a place where compassion paints reality and sight keeps it true. To newcomers Onerra seems to arrive rather than stand: dunes soften into terraces, mist thickens into streets, and towers of sand-glass shimmer into focus as if your attention is the final stone of its foundations. To the uninvited, the city is a heat-haze and a rumor.
Two great mantles hide and hold it. The Thread-Veil of the Pahric dampens hostile resonance and confounds divination, while the Imari’s Mirage Mantle folds light, sound, and scent into kinder arrangements. Together they make Onerra visible to purpose and invisible to hunger. Caravans report walking “into a change of air” before the first arches appear—rooted ribs of glass and salt, veined with quiet green light.

The Reality Anchor Copy link
At Onerra’s core, beneath the Library esplanade, stands The Keel of Thaleira—a ring of hourglass monoliths grown from sand-glass, memory-salt, and shellbone. Here Pahric souls returning from Demuria re-enter their bodies through Anchor Rites: breath counted against star-time, name spoken against true-time, vision braided to lived-time. Imari Inksingers paint the Reunion Script across the brow and palms to ease reintegration; Prism-Scribes tune the Keel’s tone so the returning shard catches the correct thread. If a fragment falters, the Keel holds it safely in Lumen Wells until the body is ready—no vision is lost, only delayed.
The Great Library of Zemek’Thal Copy link
Onerra is home to the Library’s Seven Spires—Xalador’s mirrored paradox keeps, Sol’Keth’s living tapestries, Galthor’s star-law terraces, Parerith’s tide and trade atria, Azaveth’s reflection wells, Ivra’Nar’s restorative courts, and Veylan’s central axis with the Sandbound Compendium. The central courts are faintly thread-dampened; speech drops to a felt whisper, and even illusions walk softly here. Shelved Veyli rearrange the catalog like flocks of sleeping birds—when a new truth arrives, aisles glide and stairs re-count themselves.
Districts of a Moving City Copy link
• Cloudgate: Where the Cloud-Bridge kisses stone. Travelers cross mist that remembers footfalls; an Imari wind-choir keeps the span steady by song.
• Thaleira Esplanade: Broad steps and quiet pools leading into Veylan. Scribes trace star-water on the surface to consult convergences.
• The Glass-Stacks: Sand-glass towers used as observatories by night and light-organs by day; code-light ripples down their ribs like rain.
• Brushgate: Caravan quarter braided with banner-streets; market stalls are tents by dawn, galleries by dusk, and stories by night.
• The Tide-Break: A harbor of stone fingers and woven kelp-piers; Imari fold the horizon to shorten crossings, Pahric chart safe approaches on singing buoys.
• Quiet Quarter: Thread-damp cells, negotiation gardens, and mediation halls where Seravash and Galthor arbiters shape peace with illusion and oath.
• The Mirrored Lanes: Azaveth’s precinct—silver pools, memory-chambers, and mirrored alleys where alternate outcomes are studied, never flaunted.
Governance & Daily Rhythm Copy link
The city’s civil matters are held by the Emirath Curia—a twin stewardship of an Imari Inksinger-Curate and a Pahric Prism-Curate who convene open circles at the Thaleira steps. Strategic matters answer to the Veil-Watch (Pahric) and the Hue-Keep (Imari). Every dusk, civic duties are marked by three familiar tones: Galthor’s long note to close contracts, Sol’Keth’s rising chord to invite story, and Veylan’s steady hum to mark the hour of stillness. Onerra sleeps, but never entirely; the mantles do not blink.
The Grove of Gathering, Onerra Copy link
Though the ancient Grove of Gathering belongs to Vahlia, Onerra keeps a Travelers’ Grove for sessions that cannot wait upon the forest. Root-pillars grown from petrified kelp circle a low amphitheater; above, a canopy of woven banners diffuses desert light into soft color. At the center rests a smaller Balance Stone, quarried from Vahlwood and set within glass-salt. When the Council meets here, the Mirages are stilled, the Thread-Veil thins, and the city lets the world see it plainly—a courtesy and a warning.
The City’s Defense: Cloak Before Claw Copy link
Onerra’s first defense is misdirection. Storms are turned sideways; streets appear longer than they are; hostile scouts swear the city walks. Should Wither press, the Keel projects a Shear-Chime that separates corrupted braids into harmless color, while Atrazhel-trained allies from abroad anchor the perimeter. The last resort is Stillfall—a full dampening of both mantles. In that silence, even memory must stand honestly.
The Mirage Striders — Veylun Sarai Copy link
Colloquially called the Mirage Striders, their formal name is the Veylun Sarai (“Walkers of the Veil”). They are Onerra’s vanguard and wardens, drawn from Triune Imari and Spiral-tested Pahric, paired into fluid cadres that think in color and count in stars.
Mandate:
• Wayfinding & Rescue: Track lost caravans through sand-folds; reopen Esho Gates and guide the weak by illusion that feels like home.
• Anchorkeeping: Tend beacon-rings and Lumen Wells; time the Keel to returning fragments; retrieve those snagged in Demuria’s eddies.
• Veilcraft & Counter-Mirage: Unravel hostile glamers, stitch safe corridors through riot or storm, and lay Kind Paths—soft illusions that lead danger elsewhere without blood.
• Concord & Quiet War: Escort emissaries; pre-empt conflict by altering approach rather than outcome; when forced, fight like absence—here, then not, and behind you.
Regalia & Methods: Their cloaks are half-script, half-sandlight; standing still, they vanish into sky or stone. The Imari half of a pair carries a Hue-Fan etched with Triune lines; the Pahric half bears a Thread-Rod keyed to the Keel. Together they draw the Vey-Sigil, a brief sign that says to the city, let this pass, and to enemies, there is nothing here to hurt. Their oath is simple: Guide first. Guard if needed. Be seen last.
The Feel of Onerra Copy link
Visitors speak of a soft pressure at the temples, like weather about to change. Ink-scent rides the wind. Pools reflect how you are before they reflect the sky. Children play at the Cloudgate tracing constellations on the mist, and the mist remembers. In Onerra, reality is courteous: it moves aside to let mercy through, then tidies itself so the ledger stays true.
