Asherak — Storm-Cursed Homeland of the Uthuru Copy link

What Asherak Is Copy link

Asherak is a peninsula-sized scar jutting from Erevath’s eastern rim—a land where lightning writes its name across the sky, rain falls like acid on hot iron, and the wind tastes of salt, sulfur, and old engines. To cartographers it’s a hazard zone. To merchants it’s a margin of error. To the Uthuru, it is home: an ever-shifting crucible where only the adaptable endure. Storms, thread-burnt geology, and the ruins of empires create a living scrapyard—equal parts frontier, graveyard, and forge.

Climate & Character Copy link

Asherak lives under a permanent argument between sea and sky. Electrical storms roll in stacked layers; thunder can rumble for hours without pause. “Dry” days are rare and still crackle with static. The air is charged, the sea is violent, and the ground is black basalt or glassed sand pocked by steam vents. Thread-fire flares—brief eruptions of prismatic flame—lick out of fissures after tempests, mutating anything too slow to flee.

The Dagger-Chain Mountains Copy link

A serrated spine of razor peaks splits Asherak from heartland to coast. Caves honeycomb the range, some natural, many bored by ancient thread-machines or burrowing warbeasts. Clifftop ledges hold eyries of winged Uthuru and signal pyres that answer storms with fire. Echoes behave strangely here—voices repeat out of order, and one summit’s shout can return from another miles away.

The Ash-Steps (Asherak Causeway) Copy link

Carved into the Dagger-Chain and descending to the Stormwrack Deep, the Ash-Steps are a colossal basalt staircase melted and refrozen by ages of lightning. Each landing is a territory: shrine, ossuary, raider camp, or winch-yard. During high tide or black squalls, the lowest flights vanish under boiling surf. For Uthuru youths, the Causeway Trial is rite of passage—race the storm, steal a live scrap from a wreck still in the waves, and return breathing. The Steps also serve as war-dock: chained hulls become platforms, siege cranes, even temples of rust.

The Wreckway Junkfields Copy link

Below the stormline sprawls a horizon of broken ships and burnt caravans. The Wreckway is where the Khatra (Junkwrights) reign. Bone-and-iron gantries arch over channels of oily water; green oil-flames gutter in rain. Salvage towers hold heaps of sun-stones, voidsteel splinters, and thread-gut cabling. Nothing is waste: a rib becomes a spar; a rudder becomes a guillotine; a saint’s reliquary becomes a battery housing. Nights here glow sickly; days ring with hammers and arguments.

Hrolkrug, the City That Should Not Be Copy link

Half hive, half furnace, Hrolkrug clings to a cratered cliff like a metal barnacle, its crooked towers stitched from slag, ship-iron, and thread-bone. The Mawspire at its heart drinks power from the wound beneath; the Forge-Crypts below burn the dead and refit the living; the Bone-Bazaar trades in anything that hurts to lose. Rule is simple: whoever holds the Mawspire rules—until the city likes someone else more. Streets shift, walls grow, and the skyline changes after every coup.

Blackrot Hollow & the Fungal Chasms Copy link

South-east of Hrolkrug, steam-swamps and obsidian sinkholes hide Blackrot Hollow, where spore-forests talk in psychic hums and the Karkax Strain knit their hive-minds. Thread-mist here stains lungs and memory; travelers mark ropes with tactile knots and copper sleeves so companions can follow the line when the fog hides the path.

The Stormwrack Deep Copy link

The sea at Asherak’s foot is a restless machine. Currents twist like cables, sucking wrecks into coves and hurling them back as shrapnel. Basalt stacks rise like broken teeth; some are hollow, and at least one belches violet flame after cloudbursts. Sea life is hardy or monstrous: glass-shelled crabs, eel-knots that spark when struck, and long, pale things that follow lanterns.

Flora, Fauna, and Thread Anomalies Copy link

Life adapts or ends. Brine-thistle drinks salt; ember-lichen glows after lightning; ironvines root in rust and strangle anchors. Scrapfiends prowl—half flesh, half machine, animated by residue Threads. Birds are clever scavengers; the worst learn to drop metal on heads during storms.

People & Polities Copy link

Asherak has no kings—only moments. Warbands claim ledges, landings, and lanes until outshouted or out-bled.

• Mawborn read futures in flame and bone.

• Skathehowl ride stormwinds with sail-wings and kill by scream.

• Dhorzmalgrait worship entropy in steel and haul engines from the Pale Road.

• Threadrot Kin make temples of their own mutations.

• Grasping Coil smiles with poison and psalms in the swamp shades.

• Vultreach trade secrets for teeth and vice versa.

• Ironhowl (fallen Zaltar) keep dueling rings that never cool. Territory maps change weekly; reputation lasts longer than borders.

Travel & Trade Copy link

No sane chart survives first contact with a storm. Guides sell “routes” measured in breath-counts (how many breaths until cover), not miles. Traders hug the edge of Pale Road currents and pay bribes in spare parts and hard liquor. The best payment is a promise to come back with something that explodes on purpose.

Customs & Rites Copy link

• Taking a Name: earn it through treachery, invention, or an impossible theft.

• Storm-Wakes: funerals at the Steps—lash the dead to a mast, set it ablaze, dare the sea to keep them.

• The Hunt of Hunger: devour a corrupted beast to awaken your “true” form; survive what you become.

• Severance: those who would rule Hrolkrug burn away their own name and bleed into the Throne.

Threats & Opportunities for Adventurers Copy link

• Salvage Runs: recover a living engine from the Wreckway before a Junkwright bolts it to a monster.

• Causeway Escorts: help a youth survive their Trial and make enemies of whoever bet they wouldn’t.

• Storm-Diplomacy: hire a Skathehowl flight to find a ship in a black squall—pay in secrets, not coin.

• Hrolkrug Heist: the Bone-Bazaar sells a relic that should not exist. Get in, get it, get out before the city rearranges around you.
