Hrolkrug – The Maw of Chaos Copy link
The City That Should Not Be Copy link
Hrolkrug is less a city than a wound that refuses to close. Perched along the storm-clawed cliffs of Asherak, it squats within the crater left by a fallen Thread-Guardian whose name was erased from the Weave. What grew atop that corpse was not planned, not designed, but vomited forth by the Uthuru’s hunger and Vel’s shadow. From afar, Hrolkrug appears as a broken hive: crooked towers, skeletal bridges, smoke-belching chimneys, and jagged layers of iron and bone that shift and collapse only to be reforged again. To stand within it is to feel the land itself rejecting order—it is a place that hums with entropy.

The Mawspire Copy link
At the city’s molten heart rises the Mawspire, a bent spire of fused hulls, thread-bone, and volcanic glass. It trembles with stolen energy, its veins glowing violet with chaotic flame. Whoever holds the Mawspire is the ruler of Hrolkrug—until the city itself betrays them. Its crown is the Throne of Rind, a seething amalgam of iron and devoured souls. To sit upon it is to bleed part of yourself into the city’s pulse; from then on, walls groan when you breathe, streets shift when you sleep.
The Forge-Crypts Copy link
Beneath the Mawspire lie the Forge-Crypts: cavernous halls of black iron where the Uthuru burn their dead and rethread them into monsters, machines, or both. It is here that Junkwrights, Flesh-Crafters, and War-Alchemists ply their craft without limit. Corpses are welded to scrap; hearts pump molten oil; wings are stitched from sails and bone. Nothing rests here—every scream is recycled into invention.
The Bone-Bazaar Copy link
Twisting through alleys of metal and soot is the Bone-Bazaar, a market that trades in agony and audacity. Weapons, limbs, poisons, memories, and even threads themselves are sold for prices that can rarely be measured in coin. A scream may pay for a blade. A secret may buy you a night’s lodging. The bazaar is where Uthuru warbands barter stolen Corvian steel, Gahlian engines, or Meridian relics, transforming the detritus of the world into fuel for their endless cycle of ruin.
Rule Through Ruin Copy link
Hrolkrug knows no monarchy, no council, no permanence. Its ruler is the one who survives the Trial of Severance—a ritual that demands the candidate enter the Womb of Threadfire beneath the Mawspire, abandon their name forever, face challengers in thirteen dawnless duels, and bleed into the Throne. To win is to command the city until it consumes you. Only six have ever endured; the latest, Kharvag the Unsplit, rules not through charisma or faith but by sheer unbreakable will. He is beast, judge, and storm given form—a tyrant of chaos who believes Hrolkrug itself is the first mouth of a god that is still gnawing its way back into existence.
A Living City Copy link
Hrolkrug does not sit still. Towers rise and fall, streets collapse, walls bleed smoke, and whole neighborhoods slide into the sea only to be rebuilt with new scavenged parts. Some whisper that the city is alive, its shifting skyline a reflection of Vel’s pulse beneath the ground. The prophets known as the Unspooled insist that every scream, every raid, every sacrifice feeds a deeper hunger—that one day, Hrolkrug will stand, walk, and devour the coast itself.
Life in the Maw Copy link
To live in Hrolkrug is to exist in a crucible. Food is scavenged or stolen; shelter is found in rusted hulls or under collapsed arches; survival depends on allegiance to a warband, a Junkwright, or a Bazaar-lord. No one here is safe, yet no one here is weak—every citizen is part of the city’s furnace, either feeding its fires or becoming fuel. Outsiders fear it. Merchants avoid it. But those who dare to walk its streets find a truth few will admit: Hrolkrug is not just chaos. It is freedom, raw and unbound.
