Craftsmanship Through Experience Copy link
Knowledge teaches a Hero to understand the world.
Tools teach them to shape it.
While Topics represent what your Hero has studied, Tools represent the practical disciplines they have learned through experience, repetition, and hard work. Every craft requires years of patience, countless mistakes, and the guidance of those willing to pass their knowledge to the next generation.
The Tools section records the professions, trades, and crafts your Hero has devoted themselves to learning before and throughout their adventures.
Whether forging steel, constructing buildings, preparing medicines, repairing machinery, or weaving the living Threads of Rhuna, every Tool reflects a lifetime of practiced skill.
Tool Kits Copy link
Rather than learning individual implements, Heroes become proficient with complete Tool Kits.
A Tool Kit represents everything required to perform a particular craft or profession. It includes the specialized equipment, practical techniques, and working knowledge necessary to undertake projects within that discipline.
Owning a Smith's Kit means far more than carrying a hammer. It includes the tongs, punches, files, chisels, clamps, measuring tools, and countless small implements a smith depends upon every day. Likewise, a Fieldcraft Kit contains the essential gear needed for wilderness survival, while a Threader's Kit provides the delicate instruments required to safely study and manipulate living Threads.
Each Tool Kit represents years of accumulated experience rather than a single object.
Materials Copy link
Every craft depends upon understanding the materials from which it is created.
Each Tool Kit is associated with one or more Material Types, representing the broad families of substances your Hero has learned to work with throughout their training.
These Material Types include:
• Organic — Wood, plants, fibers, and naturally grown materials.
• Beast — Leather, bone, horn, shell, hides, fur, and other animal products.
• Mineral — Stone, metals, crystal, ore, and worked earth.
• Mechanical — Machinery, gears, springs, clockwork, and engineered devices.
• Essence — Alchemical compounds, reagents, magical catalysts, inks, oils, and volatile substances.
• Thread — Living Threads, resonance materials, and Thread-reactive components.
• Environmental — Water, soil, weather, terrain, fire, and other naturally occurring environmental elements.
Material Types are intentionally broad. They describe the categories of substances your Hero understands rather than limiting them to a single material. As your Hero gains new Tool Kits, they expand both their practical skills and the range of materials they are capable of working with.
Growing Your Craft Copy link
Mastery is earned through experience.
As your Skill Pathway advances, your Hero gains access to increasingly specialized Tool Kits. Each new Kit reflects another discipline they have studied through apprenticeship, experimentation, travel, or years of dedicated practice.
Some Heroes become renowned specialists, mastering a single profession to extraordinary heights. Others cultivate a broad collection of practical trades, becoming adaptable artisans capable of solving many different problems.
Neither path is superior. Each reflects a different kind of Hero.
Tools During Play Copy link
Tool Kits provide creative solutions to challenges that cannot be overcome through strength or knowledge alone.
A skilled artisan might repair damaged equipment, reinforce a collapsing structure, prepare life-saving medicines, construct shelter, decipher unusual workmanship, or craft entirely new objects from the resources available.
When a Hero possesses an appropriate Tool Kit, the WorldKeeper should encourage inventive approaches to problems and reward thoughtful craftsmanship with meaningful narrative opportunities.
The greatest craftsmen often solve problems long before a weapon ever leaves its sheath.
Improvisation Copy link
Possessing a Tool Kit does not guarantee perfect conditions.
Many adventures take place far from workshops and civilized comforts. Heroes may be forced to improvise with damaged equipment, unfamiliar materials, or limited resources.
Even so, a trained craftsperson recognizes techniques, understands proper methods, and knows how to adapt when circumstances demand it. Their expertise allows them to attempt projects that would be impossible for an untrained individual.
Choosing Your Tools Copy link
When selecting Tool Kits, consider the life your Hero lived before becoming an adventurer.
Ask yourself:
• Who taught my Hero this craft?
• Why did they choose to learn it?
• Was it a profession, a family tradition, or a personal passion?
• What kinds of work are they proudest of creating?
• How has this craft shaped the way they view the world?
The answers often reveal as much about your Hero as the Tool Kits themselves.
Every Craft Leaves a Mark Copy link
Not every Hero changes Rhuna through battle.
Some leave behind sturdy bridges that endure for generations.
Some forge blades worthy of legends.
Some preserve forgotten knowledge within beautifully bound books.
Others construct homes, brew medicines, weave living Threads, or repair machines that keep entire communities alive.
Every Tool Kit represents more than technical ability. It is the means by which your Hero transforms ideas into lasting works that shape the world long after their journey has ended.
