Gender is fluid, multifaceted, and deeply personal, shaped by culture, lineage, and the cosmic forces that govern existence. Unlike many rigid societal norms found in other worlds, Rhuna embraces a spectrum of identities where gender is not simply a matter of biology, but of expression, connection, and even survival. Many beings, particularly the Vathians and Orvah, are born with features or energies that defy traditional classification, embodying aspects of both or neither gender at different times in their lives. Some cultures, such as the Pahric scholars, view gender as a shifting reflection of one’s place in the cosmic Weave, where one's identity may evolve in response to experiences, personal growth, or divine influence. In contrast, the Imari desert wanderers often see gender as a form of social camouflage, adapting their identity to fit their needs in a given situation—whether for safety, ritual, or power.

Rather than being constrained by fixed categories, gender is often seen as an expression of energy, balance, and purpose. Among the Rhunai, who exist in a state of perpetual equilibrium, gender is viewed not as a defining trait, but as a shifting harmony between Order, Chaos, and Balance. In the bustling trade hubs of Corvia, merchants might change their pronouns depending on the audience, leveraging their identity as a tool for negotiation and influence. The Tangled Bloods (Orvah), whose very existence is a blend of divine and mortal essence, often experience gender as a tapestry woven from their ancestral threads, adopting different forms or expressions based on their lineage or their spiritual connection to the cosmos. For some, gender shifts as naturally as the seasons, while others find comfort in a perpetual in-between state, neither fixed nor fluid, but entirely their own.

This open understanding of gender extends beyond personal identity—it is also deeply tied to power, magic, and self-determination. Many Threaders believe that gender is another aspect of the Weave, a force that can be reshaped, redirected, or even unraveled like any other thread in existence. Some warriors and diplomats adopt “battle-genders”, identities they embody only in times of conflict or negotiation, while others wield gender as a form of storytelling, transforming themselves to reflect the myths they wish to bring to life. In some traditions, choosing or rejecting a gender is considered a sacred rite, a declaration of one’s autonomy over fate itself. One’s identity is never a limitation—it is a choice, a force, and a power all its own.
