Approach describes how your Hero engages with knowledge, problems, and the unknown.

It is not a measure of intelligence, education, or competence. Instead, Approach represents your Hero’s cognitive style: the way they learn, interpret information, make decisions, and respond when they do not yet understand what is happening.

A Hero may be brilliant but reckless, inexperienced but deeply perceptive, or highly educated while still relying heavily on instinct. Approach does not determine what your Hero is capable of knowing. It determines how they arrive at understanding.

This becomes especially important when using Topics. Two Heroes may possess knowledge of the same subject and still notice entirely different things about it. Their Approach influences what information the WorldKeeper emphasizes, how that information is presented, and what conclusions may come most naturally to them.

Choosing Your Approach Copy link

When creating your Hero, choose the Approach that best reflects how they typically learn, decide, and react under uncertainty.

Approach is not meant to dictate every decision your Hero makes. People are inconsistent, and Heroes can act outside their normal instincts. Instead, Approach provides a reliable lens through which the WorldKeeper can frame information and consequences.

Ask yourself what your Hero does when confronted with something unfamiliar.

Do they stop and study it? Trust their instincts? Look for the simplest solution? Ask more questions? Doubt what they are being shown? Or charge forward and learn from whatever happens next?

The answer will usually point toward their Approach.

Scholarly Copy link

You seek understanding before action.

A Scholarly Hero prefers to understand how something works before committing themselves. They value preparation, structure, evidence, and organized knowledge. When confronted by a difficult problem, they are likely to break it into smaller parts, compare it against what they already know, and search for the most reliable explanation available.

When a Scholarly Hero uses a Topic, the WorldKeeper may provide more structured or detailed information. Relationships between ideas may be easier to recognize, complicated subjects may be broken into understandable parts, and established facts may be separated from speculation.

The strength of the Scholarly Approach is clarity. Its danger is hesitation. A Hero who continually searches for certainty may struggle when events demand an immediate decision.

Intuitive Copy link

You trust instinct over analysis.

An Intuitive Hero understands the world through impressions, emotion, pattern, and instinct. They may recognize that something is wrong long before they can explain why, or feel drawn toward an answer without being able to identify the chain of reasoning that brought them there.

When an Intuitive Hero uses a Topic, information may arrive as a warning, impression, emotional response, sudden connection, or sense of possibility. The WorldKeeper may reveal what feels important without necessarily explaining its exact significance.

Intuition can reveal danger or opportunity before more deliberate methods would uncover it. However, instinct is not certainty. The Hero may know that something matters while misunderstanding what it means.

Practical Copy link

You care about what works.

A Practical Hero approaches knowledge through usefulness. Theory matters less than application. When confronted by a problem, they look for something they can repair, manipulate, avoid, exploit, or put into immediate use.

Practical Heroes tend to adapt quickly. They are comfortable working with incomplete resources and imperfect information so long as they can identify a reliable way forward.

When a Practical Hero uses a Topic, the WorldKeeper may emphasize immediate consequences, useful procedures, exploitable weaknesses, or straightforward solutions. Rather than receiving the complete history of a damaged mechanism, for example, the Hero might learn what is broken, what can replace it, and how long the repair will hold.

The Practical Approach excels at turning knowledge into action. Its weakness is that deeper meaning can sometimes be overlooked when it does not appear immediately useful.

Curious Copy link

You pursue the unknown relentlessly.

A Curious Hero rarely stops at the first answer. Every discovery creates another question, and every unexplained detail invites investigation.

Curious Heroes are drawn toward mysteries, unusual behavior, forgotten places, strange objects, contradictions, and unanswered questions. They often notice connections because they are willing to investigate things other people dismiss as irrelevant.

When a Curious Hero uses a Topic, the WorldKeeper may reveal additional questions, unexpected details, unusual relationships, or possible avenues of investigation beyond what the Hero originally intended to discover.

Curiosity often leads to discoveries that would otherwise remain hidden. It can also create complications. Some doors were closed for a reason, and some questions draw attention merely by being asked.

Skeptical Copy link

You question everything.

A Skeptical Hero is reluctant to accept appearances, convenient explanations, or unquestioned assumptions. They look for contradictions, weaknesses, ulterior motives, and evidence that something is not what it seems.

This does not necessarily make them cynical. Skepticism may come from discipline, caution, experience, or simply the belief that truth survives examination.

When a Skeptical Hero uses a Topic, the WorldKeeper may point toward inconsistencies, alternative explanations, suspicious details, or assumptions that deserve to be challenged. Information that initially appears obvious may be presented alongside reasons to doubt it.

This can make Skeptical Heroes particularly difficult to deceive. However, constant doubt can also slow decisions and make trustworthy information harder to accept.

Reckless Copy link

You act before understanding.

A Reckless Hero does not require certainty before moving forward. When information is incomplete, they would rather make a decision and deal with the consequences than remain trapped in deliberation.

Reckless Heroes often learn through direct experience. They test theories by touching the strange object, entering the forbidden doorway, provoking the suspicious stranger, or attempting the dangerous solution.

When a Reckless Hero uses a Topic, the WorldKeeper may provide only the information necessary to act immediately. Important details may remain uncertain, risks may be poorly understood, and consequences may reveal what preparation would have uncovered beforehand.

This Approach can force stagnant situations forward and seize opportunities more cautious Heroes might miss. It also makes misunderstanding, overlooked danger, and unintended escalation considerably more likely.

Approach and Topics Copy link

Approach becomes most visible when a Hero draws upon a Topic.

A Topic represents knowledge the Hero possesses or can meaningfully engage with. Approach determines the angle through which that knowledge becomes useful.

Consider a Hero investigating Wither Corruption.

A Scholarly Hero might identify recognizable stages of corruption and understand how they relate to known examples. An Intuitive Hero may immediately sense that the corruption is behaving incorrectly. A Practical Hero might recognize what must be removed, contained, or avoided before it spreads.

A Curious Hero could notice an anomaly suggesting that this particular corruption differs from previous cases. A Skeptical Hero may realize that what everyone assumes to be Wither Corruption does not entirely fit the evidence. A Reckless Hero might learn enough to intervene immediately, while remaining dangerously uncertain about what their intervention will cause.

All six Heroes are engaging with the same Topic.

What changes is the shape of the knowledge they receive.

Approach in Play Copy link

Approach does not grant numerical bonuses and does not function as a conventional skill rating.

Instead, it helps establish how information moves between the Hero and the world.

The WorldKeeper may use a Hero’s Approach when deciding what details become immediately apparent, how discoveries are described, what uncertainties remain, and what kinds of consequences naturally follow from the Hero’s decisions.

Approach may also influence how a Hero commits to a Moment, interprets Escalation, or reacts when circumstances change faster than expected.

A Scholarly Hero may want another moment to understand what is happening. A Reckless Hero may already be moving. A Skeptical Hero may challenge the premise of the situation itself, while a Curious Hero notices something none of them were originally looking for.

These differences should create opportunities for characterization rather than restrictions on play.

Approach Is a Lens Copy link

Approach never prevents a Hero from acting outside their normal tendencies.

A Scholarly Hero can make an impulsive decision. A Reckless Hero can stop and carefully investigate. A Skeptical Hero can choose to trust someone without demanding proof.

Doing so simply means the Hero is behaving outside their usual way of engaging with the world. Depending on the situation, that difference may create uncertainty, tension, or an interesting character moment.

Approach should help players answer a simple question:

When my Hero does not know what happens next, how do they look for the answer?

Wealth is who stands with you.

Knowledge is what you carry.

Approach is how you see the world.
