The fungi of Rhuna serve as natural recyclers of the planet’s energy, playing a vital role in the Universe Energy Cycle by breaking down and redistributing life-force from dead or decaying matter. They exist in an intricate balance between Order, Balance, and Chaos, reflecting the influence of Zal (Order), Rhun (Balance), and Vel (Chaos) in the processes of death, renewal, and transformation.

The Embermold — Zal’s Fungal Domain (Order in Decay) Copy link

The Embermold embodies structured and controlled decomposition, ensuring that death always serves a higher purpose. These glowing, ember-like fungi spread in rigid, patterned networks, their light burning away disease and corruption. Sacred sites such as the Embervaults, underground fungal catacombs, house ritual burials where the dead are decomposed in measured cycles, returning their energy with precision. Zal, the Torch of Order, oversees the Embermold as a divine safeguard against chaos. For Order-aligned sects, the Embermold is used in funeral rites, its fungi preventing corruption and safely channeling energy back into the world. Even Valanarks of Order commit their fallen warriors to its flames, ensuring their essence passes on without risk of Wither.

The Verdant Veil — Rhun’s Fungal Domain (The Balance of Life and Death) Copy link

The Verdant Veil thrives as the mediator between death and renewal, with fungi that recycle energy symbiotically. Towering, bioluminescent mushroom forests glow with translucent caps, absorbing both sunlight and residual life-force from decay. Within the Bloomspire Vaelorans, their mycelium threads weave through forest roots, linking plant and animal cycles into a unified rhythm. Rhun ensures that these fungi act as connectors, never destroyers, keeping life flowing continuously. Among mortals, the Tangled Bloods and Tyrru consume Verdant Veil fungi in ceremonies to commune with the energy of Balance. Some species create vast spore-networks that transmit information across regions, used by wildlanders and scholars alike to sense changes in the land.

The Witherblight — Vel’s Fungal Domain (The Hunger of Chaos) Copy link

The Witherblight represents decay without restraint, consuming until only rot and ruin remain. Its sickly, black-veined mushrooms pulse and spread aggressively, swallowing entire landscapes into fungal wastelands. The Blight-Tombs, ruins overtaken by Witherfungus, are haunted by fungal monstrosities and restless dead. Vel wields the Witherblight as a destructive plague, turning the natural recycling of life into unchecked consumption. These fungi do not only devour matter—they unravel Threads themselves, feeding Vel’s hunger. When energy concentrates dangerously in one place, Witherblight erupts to consume it, preventing stability or growth. Uthuru warbands weaponize these fungi, seeding enemy lands with spores to reduce fertile regions to rot and chaos.

The Emberborn — Servants of Zal Copy link

Known as the Ashen Recyclers, the Emberborn are intelligent, flame-infused fungal beings tasked with cleansing decay. Their spores release purifying ash that prevents disease and halts corruption. They dwell near Embervaults, tending to sacred burials and guarding against Vel’s intrusion.

The Sporekin — Servants of Rhun Copy link

The Sporekin embody the balance of the Verdant Veil, appearing as humanoid fungi who act as guardians of renewal. They sing through vibrating spores, spreading harmonies that guide travelers and heal landscapes. The Tyrru often consult with Sporekin, seeking wisdom to maintain the cycles of energy and life.

The Witherborne — Spawns of Vel Copy link

The Witherborne are fungal abominations born of betrayal, corruption, and suffering. Arising in places infested by Veldraken, they carry the power of walking decay, spreading Wither with every step. Their spores make them nearly unkillable, regenerating endlessly unless purged by divine fire.

The Greater Mycelial Network — Rhuna’s Underground Life Web Copy link

All fungi in Rhuna are woven together into a hidden mycelial network that courses beneath the planet’s surface. The Verdant Veil’s threads act as living pathways, carrying balanced energy throughout the land. The Embermold serves as a protective firewall, restricting corruption and preventing the Witherblight from spreading unchecked. Meanwhile, the Witherblight’s fungi act as malignant cancers, unraveling Threads and feeding Vel’s insatiable hunger.

This underground network mirrors the Universe Energy Cycle: Zal’s fungi prevent stagnation by burning away what must end, Rhun’s fungi maintain equilibrium through continuous recycling, and Vel’s fungi devour excess until only ruin remains. Too much decay leads to collapse into chaos, while too much preservation halts renewal. Only the balance of these forces allows Rhuna to continue thriving. Threaders of the Blue (Adaptation) and Yellow (Harmony) Threads study this web closely, seeking to understand how life and death are forever bound together.

Fungi as the Divine Recyclers of Power Copy link

The fungi of Rhuna embody the eternal cycle of death, renewal, and transformation. Zal’s Embermold ensures Order by burning away what must be gone. Rhun’s Verdant Veil sustains the flow of Balance, guiding decay into new life. Vel’s Witherblight consumes without reason, driving Chaos into unchecked ruin. Together, these forces ensure that Rhuna never stagnates, forever shifting between destruction and rebirth. Yet, with the rise of the Paradox Threads and disturbances in the Weave, this balance grows fragile, threatening to usher in a new age of decay, transformation, or unforeseen renewal.
