THE STONE-ROOTED KEEPERS OF BALANCE Copy link

Rhunai · book illustration

“The roots stretch deep, the branches reach wide, and in between, we walk the line. We do not command the storm nor silence the fire—we are the breath between, the pause before action, the harmony within the discord.” — Elura Thaen, Elder of the Celestial Grove

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE RHUNAI Copy link

The Rhunai are the Astralkin of Rhun, the Deity of Balance. They awaken within stone-seed chambers beneath Rhunatha, the Great Tree, where root, stone, Thread, and living memory converge. They first emerged when Vel's arrival disturbed the Weave, not as soldiers of Order or agents of Chaos, but as beings created to prevent either force from consuming the other. To be Rhunai is to live between extremes—to recognize that contradiction does not always demand victory, and that opposing forces can sometimes be made to coexist without either being erased.

Where the Zaltar may cut corruption away and the Karthine reflect what stands before them, the Rhunai seek the point at which a system can endure. They mend, redirect, anchor, and reconcile. Their connection to Rhunatha gives them an instinctive relationship with the deeper rhythms of Rhuna itself: roots spreading beneath kingdoms, stone carrying pressure through mountains, branches bending beneath weather rather than breaking against it.

Balance, however, does not mean neutrality. A Rhunai does not stand motionless between two sides simply because both exist. Balance is active. Sometimes one force must be strengthened. Sometimes another must be restrained. Sometimes something broken must be separated before it can be joined again. The Rhunai are expected to listen long enough to understand which action restores equilibrium rather than merely satisfying the loudest demand.

That can make them seem impossibly patient to those who want immediate answers. Their restraint is sometimes mistaken for indecision, but the Rhunai understand that acting too quickly can create a second imbalance while attempting to repair the first.

LIFE AS A RHUNAI Copy link

Young Rhunai are known as Seekers. Their path is deliberately left uncertain. They wander, observe, listen, and experience conflict without being immediately assigned a role within it. The purpose of this period is not to avoid commitment, but to discover what form of Balance naturally expresses itself through them.

In time, most Rhunai awaken more fully to one of three aspects of Rhunatha. The Serathi follow the branches, carrying Balance outward into communities and conflicts. The Varunei follow the roots, becoming guardians and anchors at places where instability threatens to tear through the world. The rare Rhunathen follow the crown, where Rhunatha reaches toward the Astral threshold, and learn to weave opposing forces together where simple restraint is no longer enough.

Rhunai traditions frequently describe the Great Tree as more than a sacred symbol. Root, trunk, branch, and crown each express a different truth about Balance. Roots hold. Branches yield. A trunk carries tension between them. The crown reaches into forces the roots may never touch. A healthy whole depends upon all of these things occurring at once.

When a Rhunai's cycle finally ends, they do not understand this as death in the mortal sense. Their body and consciousness return to the greater life-web, leaving impressions within the Weave and the Tha. What was learned does not disappear entirely. It becomes another layer in something much larger than the individual who carried it.

PLAYING A RHUNAI Copy link

Rhunai tend to suit players who enjoy mediation, support, control, patience, pattern recognition, and finding solutions that do not simply choose one extreme over another. Their natural fantasy is not about overpowering the world, but about changing the conditions under which a problem exists.

A Rhunai Hero can be enormously useful when a situation is escalating. They are well suited to stabilizing allies, slowing dangerous momentum, recognizing incompatible pressures, protecting vulnerable spaces, or finding a third path where everyone else sees only two choices.

This does not mean Rhunai should always compromise. Some situations are fundamentally unstable. Some forces cannot coexist safely. The interesting question for a Rhunai is usually not whether to act, but what must move, what must remain, and how far either side can be allowed to go before Balance becomes impossible.

They work especially well for players who enjoy seeing the battlefield, conversation, or larger story as an interconnected system rather than a collection of isolated problems.

APPEARANCE Copy link

Rhunai appear as though stone learned to grow.

Their bodies combine weathered stone, living root-fibers, smooth mineral surfaces, bark-like textures, and branching growths in proportions that vary greatly between individuals.

Some appear almost humanoid at first glance, their earthen skin crossed by fine root-lines beneath the surface. Others are more visibly ancient and elemental, with shoulders like carved rock, branching structures emerging from the head or back, fingers tapering into polished rootwood, or seams where living fibers disappear into stone.

These materials are not separate layers.

Stone does not cover a wooden body.

Roots do not grow across an otherwise mineral surface.

In a Rhunai, geology and living growth are parts of the same anatomy.

Their coloration favors weathered gray, sandstone, clay, umber, muted moss, dark root-brown, pale stone, and mineral green.

Beneath those surfaces, subtle light may move like sap through a root system, carrying several Thread hues rather than a single dominant color. Their eyes often reflect those colors simultaneously, giving the impression of several faint lights moving beneath deep water.

Gender presentation is fluid and self-defined. Some Rhunai take strongly masculine or feminine forms, while others remain more difficult to categorize. Their bodies may change gradually over long periods: new branches grow where old ones were shed, stone surfaces smooth or fracture, root patterns deepen, and mineral coloration shifts as identity develops.

A Rhunai should look like living rootstone—something that could only exist in a world where stone and growth were never truly separate.

SERATHI Copy link

THE BRANCHES OF BALANCE Copy link

WHAT MAKES A SERATHI DIFFERENT Copy link

The Serathi are Rhunai whose connection to Rhunatha expresses itself through the branch: outward growth, flexibility, contact, and the ability to bend without surrendering structure.

They are the most likely Rhunai to live among other peoples. Serathi enter disputes, communities, courts, expeditions, and fragile alliances not to rule them, but to recognize when one pressure has begun overwhelming everything around it. Their gift lies in making enough space for another possibility to exist.

Their relationship with language is especially important. Words spoken with genuine equilibrium can slow rising anger, expose the point at which two sides stopped listening, or redirect a conflict before it becomes irreversible. This does not make Serathi pacifists. It makes them specialists in intervention before force becomes the only remaining language.

PLAYING A SERATHI Copy link

Serathi tend to suit players who enjoy social play, emotional awareness, diplomacy, support, de-escalation, and subtle influence.

They are especially effective for characters who prefer to alter the direction of a scene rather than dominate it outright. A Serathi might calm an enemy, steady an ally, expose the hidden concern beneath an argument, or provide just enough resistance to stop a situation from tipping beyond recovery.

The challenge of playing one is knowing when gentleness has stopped being useful. The branch bends—but eventually even a branch must resist.

APPEARANCE Copy link

Serathi tend toward the most graceful and outwardly organic Rhunai forms.

Their stone bodies are often smoother and somewhat lighter than those of their kin, crossed by delicate branch-lines, fine root filaments, and subtle mineral veining.

Slender branching structures may frame the head and shoulders like natural crowns or living extensions of the skull. These growths sometimes produce small leaves, pale flowers, seed-like structures, or points of faint Thread-light.

Their bodies often favor longer lines and more flexible proportions: narrower shoulders, elongated limbs, finer hands, and root-fibers that remain visibly supple where stone transitions into movement.

Their colors tend toward pale stone, sandstone, muted moss, soft clay, weathered gray, light root-brown, and occasional mineral green.

Thread-light may travel in fine branching paths beneath the surface, especially around the face, hands, chest, and crown-like growths.

A Serathi should feel like young branches emerging from ancient stone—responsive, resilient, and capable of bending without surrendering structure.

VARUNEI Copy link

THE ROOTS THAT HOLD Copy link

WHAT MAKES A VARUNEI DIFFERENT Copy link

The Varunei embody the root-aspect of Rhunatha. Where Serathi travel outward, Varunei remain. They guard sanctuaries, root-ends, groves, fault-lines, caverns, thresholds, and other places where imbalance might spread if nothing stands firmly against it.

Their form of Balance is resistance.

A Varunei does not necessarily defeat an overwhelming force. They make themselves the thing it must pass through. Their presence stabilizes. Their patience exhausts volatility. They absorb pressure until the world around them has enough time to recover its shape.

This is why many Varunei seem severe or distant. They are accustomed to thinking in the timescale of stone and roots, where maintaining one position for years may be an action rather than an absence of action.

PLAYING A VARUNEI Copy link

Varunei suit players who enjoy defense, endurance, protection, area control, standing firm, and becoming the anchor around which everyone else can act.

Their strongest moments often occur when retreat would be easier. They create safety by refusing to yield ground, stabilizing dangerous conditions, or placing themselves between instability and whatever must survive it.

They should not feel passive. A Varunei is a character who decides, very deliberately, this goes no farther.

APPEARANCE Copy link

Varunei tend toward broader, heavier, and more deeply rooted Rhunai forms.

Their bodies may resemble layered stone reinforced by massive living roots, with thick limbs, broad shoulders, heavy mineral ridges, and natural plates grown directly from the body.

Root structures may wrap through the torso, disappear beneath stone, and emerge again along the arms, shoulders, spine, or legs. In older Varunei, the distinction between body and surrounding terrain can become increasingly subtle.

Moss, lichen, small rootlets, mineral deposits, and weathering may gather naturally across their surfaces. Some develop deep cracks filled with faint Thread-light, while others appear almost entirely solid until movement reveals the living fibers beneath.

Their colors favor dark stone, root-brown, slate, deep umber, muted green, clay, weathered gray, and moss-dark tones.

Older Varunei may carry the visual history of decades spent in one place: polished surfaces where rain has touched them repeatedly, lichen patterns that have slowly migrated across a shoulder, or roots that have thickened around the legs after years of standing watch.

A Varunei should look as though stillness itself could eventually root them into the world.

RHUNATHEN Copy link

THE CROWN BETWEEN EXTREMES Copy link

WHAT MAKES A RHUNATHEN DIFFERENT Copy link

The Rhunathen are the rarest expression of Rhunai Balance. Their connection lies with the crown of Rhunatha, where branches extend toward forces beyond ordinary earthly division.

They do not merely restrain opposing forces. They attempt to weave them together.

Order and Chaos are dangerous precisely because both possess momentum toward absolutes. A Rhunathen enters the place where those forces collide and searches for a configuration in which neither must entirely consume the other. When successful, they can repair ruptures that no simpler act of stabilization could contain.

The cost can be immense. Holding contradictory forces within a single weave places enormous strain upon the Rhunathen themselves, and some eventually dissolve back into the life-web through the effort.

PLAYING A RHUNATHEN Copy link

Rhunathen suit players who enjoy complex problem-solving, Thread manipulation, unusual solutions, high-risk support, and interacting directly with unstable systems.

They are less about choosing the right side of a conflict than understanding how the conflict itself is constructed. Their most satisfying moments should come when two apparently incompatible forces can be redirected into something neither side could have produced alone.

That power carries danger. A Rhunathen is constantly working near the point where equilibrium becomes collapse. Their stories naturally involve sacrifice, difficult synthesis, and the possibility that saving something may require allowing themselves to become part of the solution.

APPEARANCE Copy link

Rhunathen are often the most luminous, unusual, and visibly unresolved of the Rhunai.

Their stone may be pale, translucent, crystalline, or threaded with several mineral tones at once. Fine roots frequently emerge into elaborate branching structures around the head, shoulders, and upper back, creating silhouettes that resemble miniature crowns or canopies.

Their internal Thread-light rarely settles into a single hue.

Several colors may move simultaneously through root-lines, mineral seams, and fractures in the stone, crossing and separating as opposing forces pass through the body.

Portions of a Rhunathen may appear subtly unfinished.

A branch may gradually become crystal.

A root may disappear into translucent stone.

A section of the arm may seem mineral at one angle and fibrous at another.

The body gives the impression that root, branch, Thread, and stone are continuously negotiating what shape they should take.

Their palette favors pale mineral gray, crystal-white, muted clay, translucent green, root-brown, silver stone, and shifting Thread-color.

A Rhunathen should look like a fragment of Rhunatha’s crown given temporary individual form.
