THE SCENT-BEARERS OF LIVING ABUNDANCE Copy link

“To breathe is to remember. To taste is to understand. We do not bind the world in chains of law—we inhale it, let it flow through us, and carry its scent forever. The wise do not hoard the wind; they become its perfume.” — Selmira Vaylen, Vaelrisae Heartweaver of Narriel
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE KALTHIR Copy link
The Kalthir are a people of scent, appetite, communion, and living abundance. Like the other Vathians, their story begins not with ancestry, but with fracture.
Before Xantyr’s betrayal, there was Kalthi, Astraleth of growth, fertility, instinct, desire, and the endless multiplication of life. When she was shattered, her divine essence did not disappear. It was divided into innumerable fragments and carried forward through mortal existence.
The Kalthir are those fragments.
Every Kalthir carries an infinitesimal portion of Kalthi within them—not as distant divine blood, but as a piece of the Astraleth herself made individual. Through the Vathian cycle, each life begins anew, with its own memories, loves, fears, loyalties, and desires, while something older persists beneath it: an instinct to consume, nurture, bond, propagate, and experience the living world as intimately as possible.
For the Kalthir, the senses are not merely tools for observing the world.
They are how the world becomes known.
To smell rain arriving across dry grass, taste fruit grown by another hand, breathe a lover’s cultivated perfume, or feel the warmth of soil beneath bare feet is a form of participation. Something has crossed the boundary between self and world and become part of memory.
This makes Kalthir culture intensely relational. They are rarely interested in abstractions when experience can be touched, smelled, tasted, planted, cooked, cultivated, or shared.
Their great philosophical question is not whether desire should exist.
It is what desire owes to everything it touches.
LIFE AS A KALTHIR Copy link
The Kalthir once crossed broad grasslands beneath open skies. Their culture grew around movement, seasonal abundance, shared food, scent-marked journeys, and the stewardship of living systems.
Then the world changed.
As the Vahlwood expanded, immense branches and root systems swallowed much of the landscape surrounding the Kalthir. The Biome-Seeds they guarded—living reservoirs containing entire ecosystems in potential—were drawn into the forest canopy. What had once been a people of open horizons became a people of roots, pollen, canopy, and hidden paths.
The change could have destroyed them.
Instead, they adapted.
Routes through the Vahlwood were marked not with signs, but with resin, crushed leaf, pollen, bark, and carefully layered fragrances. A Kalthir runner might navigate a forest path invisible to another traveler simply by knowing which scent belongs on which tree and how recently another person passed.
Their intimacy with scent also allowed them to understand the Orm-Mara, the great winged ant queens whose colonies spread beneath the forest. Where other peoples encountered incomprehensible creatures communicating through chemistry and instinct, the Kalthir recognized something close to language.
Warning. Invitation. Territory. Hunger. Fertility. Allegiance.
Through feast-bonds and scent rites, the Kalthir formed ancient treaties with the colonies beneath them.
This same sensory philosophy shapes Kalthir relationships with one another.
The Bonding Feast is among their most important traditions. Shared food, perfume, oils, smoke, fruits, touch, and cultivated scent can mark friendship, romance, family, mourning, political agreement, or sacred responsibility. A bond is not simply declared.
It is experienced.
This does not mean the Kalthir treat intimacy casually. Quite the opposite. Their traditions are deeply concerned with consent, reciprocity, appetite, and consequence. To take without giving back is not abundance.
It is consumption.
A law that cannot bend is dead, the Kalthir say.
But growth without stewardship becomes rot.
PLAYING A KALTHIR Copy link
Kalthir tend to suit players who enjoy mobility, instinct, social connection, sensory investigation, relationships, environmental interaction, sudden bursts of action, and characters who experience the world very physically.
They are especially satisfying for players who enjoy asking what a place smells like, what someone carries on their clothes, whether food has changed, which flowers recently opened, or what emotional trace lingers after someone leaves.
Their lack of hearing naturally pushes them toward other forms of perception. A Kalthir may identify a person by scent before seeing them, recognize an unfamiliar substance through taste, detect environmental change through pollen or moisture, or notice that someone's emotional state has altered the fragrance they carry.
Their innate tendency toward Surge also supports a more impulsive style. Kalthir are well suited to characters who recognize fleeting opportunities and commit before the moment passes.
Their most interesting tension lies between appetite and stewardship.
A Kalthir is encouraged to love life, pleasure, beauty, food, romance, movement, and abundance.
But anything consumed without reciprocity eventually leaves something poorer behind.
APPEARANCE Copy link
Kalthir are organic, sensuous, mobile, and unmistakably Vathian, while remaining visually distinct from the Gahlians.
Their skin commonly falls within a violet, mauve, plum, lavender, muted wine, and gray-purple spectrum, often carrying warmer earth or gold undertones. Some individuals appear deep and richly saturated, while others are almost dusty lilac or faded violet.
Their ears are long and tapered, giving the face an elongated, wind-shaped silhouette. The nose is one of their most distinctive features: sensitive and expressive, with delicate nostrils and subtle softness around the bridge and upper lip. Their facial structure remains fully humanoid, but carries a sensory quality that immediately distinguishes them from other Vathians.
Kalthir features tend toward a distinctly feminine expression, reflecting their nature as fragments of Kalthi. Their beauty can be delicate, mature, severe, lush, or strange, but nearly always retains an organic softness and sense of embodied life.
Hair offers enormous variation. Long braids, fine plaits, wrapped cords, pale silver or lavender hair, dark purple hair, partial shaving, flowers, seedpods, preserved leaves, scent beads, and tiny bottles all appear naturally within Kalthir presentation.
Their clothing feels tactile and lived-in: purple, ochre, faded gold, muted green, brown, cream, gray, pollen-yellow, and weathered bronze. Cloaks and wraps are commonly broad and soft rather than sharply structured. Belts and cords carry scent oils, resins, seed packets, perfumes, dried flowers, food, medicines, and practical tools.
Kalthir ornament is often alive or once-living.
Butterfly wings. Moth scales. Flowers. Leaves. Seeds. Chitin. Shell. Braided grass. Resin.
A Kalthir should look as though they have been collecting small pieces of the living world everywhere they have gone.
VAELRISAE Copy link
THE MOTH-TENDERS Copy link
WHAT MAKES A VAELRISAE DIFFERENT Copy link
The Vaelrisae preserve memory through life.
They cultivate the Astral-Moths whose wings carry patterns associated with the heavens beneath which they emerged. Around the Biome-Seeds, moth pollen mingles with flowers, oils, resins, and preserved scents until entire seasons can be recalled through fragrance.
To a Vaelrisae, a moth wing is not merely beautiful.
It is a record.
A constellation can be preserved in scales.
A migration can be remembered through pollen.
A year of drought may survive centuries later as a particular dry bitterness within an archive perfume.
Their work makes them among the most contemplative Kalthir, more willing than many of their kin to remain still and observe long cycles.
They are not predicting fate.
They are preserving the sensory evidence that allows the future to understand the past.
PLAYING A VAELRISAE Copy link
Vaelrisae suit players who enjoy observation, nature, ritual, memory, subtle investigation, celestial cycles, scent-craft, and patient characters who notice long-term patterns.
They work especially well for Heroes who want to read environments rather than simply traverse them.
A Vaelrisae may identify a season from dormant pollen, trace a person through disturbed moth roosts, preserve a memory as fragrance, or recognize that a natural cycle has begun behaving incorrectly.
Their challenge is distance.
Watching life and participating in it are not the same thing.
APPEARANCE Copy link
Vaelrisae are among the most delicate, ornate, and intricately adorned of the Kalthir.
Their skin commonly favors lavender, dusty violet, soft mauve, pale plum, and muted wine tones. Fine luminous pollen may gather naturally along the shoulders, cheekbones, hair, and clothing after long periods spent tending Astral-Moths and flowering archives.
Their appearance frequently incorporates imagery drawn from the creatures they preserve. Wing fragments, gold thread resembling delicate venation, night-blooming flowers, tiny seed ornaments, translucent resin beads, pollen vessels, and fine curved jewelry can all become part of their clothing and hair.
Broad cloaks and layered mantles sometimes echo the folded silhouette of resting Astral-Moths without directly imitating them. Fine fabrics overlap like wings, while embroidered patterns record seasons, constellations, migrations, or preserved sensory histories.
Hair is often elaborate: pale silver, lavender, deep violet, or black arranged into fine braids and loops threaded with flowers, moth scales, scent beads, and tiny archival vessels.
Their colors favor soft violet, cream, faded gold, charcoal, muted green, dusty rose, moon-pale gray, and deep night tones.
They should look like gardeners who have spent so long among Astral-Moths that the night garden has begun dressing them in return.
THORYNMAR Copy link
THE ORM-MARA BONDED Copy link
WHAT MAKES A THORYNMAR DIFFERENT Copy link
The Thorynmar live closest to the roots.
They maintain the ancient agreements between the Kalthir and the Orm-Mara colonies beneath Narriel, moving through underground halls where scent carries farther and more reliably than voice.
Their education begins with pheromone.
Long before they negotiate with a queen, they learn the difference between alarm, hunger, territorial warning, brood scent, invitation, worker trails, and royal musk.
Eventually, a Thorynmar may enter into a formal feast-bond with an Orm-Mara queen, carrying her cultivated scent afterward as proof that they have been accepted by the colony.
To outsiders, this relationship can appear unsettling.
To the Thorynmar, it is simply another form of kinship.
Neither side must become the other.
Both must understand what the other needs in order to survive.
PLAYING A THORYNMAR Copy link
Thorynmar suit players who enjoy survival, diplomacy with nonhuman beings, scent-reading, endurance, symbiosis, subterranean exploration, and characters built around loyalty and mutual obligation.
They tend to be sturdier and more physically grounded than other Kalthir, making them a natural fit for characters who protect routes, carry burdens, negotiate passage, or guide companions through dangerous territory.
Their central tension is allegiance.
A bond with something powerful can create safety.
It can also create expectations.
APPEARANCE Copy link
Thorynmar are generally stockier, sturdier, and more physically substantial than other Kalthir.
Their skin often leans toward muted plum, earth-purple, gray-violet, ochre-purple, and dusty mauve. Hair tends to be arranged in heavy braids, bound close to the body, or woven with resin so that it remains controlled during work beneath the Vahlwood.
Their long ears and expressive scent-sensitive features remain unmistakably Kalthir, but their overall silhouettes are heavier and more grounded.
Chitin, resin, and materials gifted by the Orm-Mara play an important role in their ornamentation. Polished plates, shed wing casings, resin beads, curved clasps, translucent fragments, and colony-gifts may be incorporated into belts, shoulders, jewelry, or protective garments.
Their clothing favors layered wraps, reinforced sleeves, broad belts, resin-treated cloth, durable trousers, heavy sashes, protective gloves, and soft armor built for confined spaces.
Their palette tends toward earth-purple, charcoal, dark brown, ochre, faded cream, deep green, amber resin, and muted bronze.
Nothing worn by a Thorynmar needs to imitate the Orm-Mara directly. The relationship is visible through materials exchanged, gifts preserved, and garments adapted to life within their colonies.
They should look like people who can walk calmly into a nest that would devour anyone else.
LORRATHEN Copy link
THE TREE-RUNNERS Copy link
WHAT MAKES A LORRATHEN DIFFERENT Copy link
The Lorrathen made exile into a road.
They inhabit high-branch communities connected by vine bridges, narrow platforms, living architecture, and routes invisible to anyone unable to read their scent marks.
Their purpose is movement.
They carry medicine, pollen, water, messages, seed samples, warnings, and news between distant Biome-Seeds. A forest as enormous as the Vahlwood cannot remain one connected living system without people willing to cross it.
The Lorrathen became those people.
Their maps are smelled as often as read. Resin on one side of a trunk may mean safe passage. A crushed leaf may indicate a changed route. A particular flower oil might warn that a branch ahead can no longer bear weight.
For them, speed is not sport.
It is infrastructure.
PLAYING A LORRATHEN Copy link
Lorrathen suit players who enjoy movement, climbing, scouting, parkour-like traversal, navigation, courier stories, improvisation, and characters who act quickly.
They shine when a scene contains terrain.
A Lorrathen is rarely interested in walking through a place the way everyone else does. Trees, walls, roofs, ledges, ropes, vines, gaps, and vertical spaces all become possible routes.
Their weakness is momentum.
Sometimes the person accustomed to moving fastest is also the last person willing to stop.
APPEARANCE Copy link
Lorrathen are the leanest and most whip-strong of the Kalthir, their bodies shaped by climbing, leaping, balancing, and constant vertical movement through the Vahlwood.
Their skin often favors stronger violet, plum, wine, and saturated lavender tones. Hair may be kept short, partially shaved, tightly braided, or allowed to trail in narrow cords that move freely without catching easily on branches.
Their silhouettes favor fitted inner layers beneath loose scarves, split skirts, narrow trousers, flexible boots, climbing straps, belts, pouches, and lightweight wraps.
Nothing about their clothing should restrict movement.
Bark scrapes, faded scars, pollen stains, leaf fragments, resin smears, repaired tears, and worn edges are common. Their clothes often accumulate physical evidence of the routes they travel.
Their colors favor faded green, gray, violet, ochre, cream, leaf-brown, muted gold, and weathered purple.
Scent markers, resin packets, small medicine bundles, climbing cord, seeds, and messages may be distributed across belts and shoulder straps so they can be reached without stopping.
They should look like the forest has been trying unsuccessfully to catch them for years.
AURENKAI Copy link
THE GRASSLAND-BOUNDERS Copy link
WHAT MAKES AN AURENKAI DIFFERENT Copy link
The Aurenkai remember the horizon.
Of all Kalthir traditions, they have preserved the strongest attachment to the grasslands their people inhabited before the Vahlwood changed them.
They tend the Biome-Seeds that preserve plains and open-country ecosystems, but preservation is not enough.
They leave the forest.
Their great rite, the Run, carries them beyond the shelter of the Vahlwood into true open grassland to gather pollen and return before nightfall.
It is pilgrimage as much as trial.
The scent of uninterrupted grass.
Wind unobstructed by canopy.
Sunlight without leaves between it and the skin.
For the Aurenkai, these experiences are evidence that the world their ancestors knew has not vanished entirely.
PLAYING AN AURENKAI Copy link
Aurenkai suit players who enjoy endurance, wilderness travel, long-distance movement, direct action, exploration, guardianship, and characters strongly connected to freedom and open space.
Compared with the acrobatic Lorrathen, they are less about bursts of vertical speed and more about relentless forward movement.
They work especially well for Heroes who hate confinement.
Their tension with the other Kalthir traditions is also fertile character territory. An Aurenkai may love their people while quietly believing those people have forgotten what was taken from them.
APPEARANCE Copy link
Aurenkai carry the strongest visual memory of the open grasslands once inhabited by the Kalthir.
They tend toward long-legged, powerful builds suited to sustained movement across open terrain. Their clothing is broad, layered, and responsive to wind: loose wraps, long scarves, split garments, durable trousers, soft boots, wide belts, and flowing outer layers that move around the body while running.
Their skin commonly ranges through dusty violet, faded plum, muted lavender, deep wine, and sun-warmed purple, often carrying subtle ochre or gold undertones.
Hair is frequently allowed to move freely. Long braids, loose cords, pale windblown hair, deep violet plaits, and partially bound styles are common. Grasses, flowers, seeds, pollen beads, and small keepsakes from completed Runs may be woven through the hair or fastened to clothing.
Their palette favors ochre, faded gold, pale green, cream, dusty violet, weathered brown, sun-faded purple, and dry grass tones.
Their clothing often carries pieces of the open country with it: grass braided into cords, seed tassels, dried flowers, dust worked permanently into hems, or small scent bundles preserving places encountered during a Run.
An Aurenkai should look as though the horizon still belongs to them, even if they must leave home to find it.
